I am looking at buying new stirrup irons. I currently have 4 3/4 but they have the flexi rubber sides so I don’t know how much room that takes up. my foot it pretty narrow and I am only a size 7. Any suggestions on knowing if I should get a 4 1/4, 4 1/2 or a 4 3/4?
Measure the width of your boot at the ball of the foot (widest part). If you ride in different pairs, measure them all and use the widest one. Add 1/2" to 1" to that measurement (leaving 1/4" to 1/2" inch on either side of your foot).
Most people seem happy with a 4 3/4. It’s better that it be a little too big than a little too small – for safety. My size 8 shoe friend just got a pair of 4 3/4.
If you search the forum you’ll find a lot of threads, and I’d say 80% of the people posting had 4 3/4.
Okay thanks for the help!
I have tiny, narrow feet and I ride in 4 1/4 irons. Most grown ups ride in 4 3/4!
I’m size 6.5, normal width. I love my 4 1/4. anything over 4.5 makes me feel like my feet are swimming in the irons.
I’m so glad I’m not the only person who likes tiny stirrup irons!!! I ride in 4 1/4 and everyone thinks I’m strange, but I hate big irons. I feel like my feet slide around in them.
Well, most people would err on the side of larger stirrups for safely. I’d rather not get my foot stuck in there and get dragged around the ring if I fall off. Hence the 4 3/4. I would never encourage anyone to ride in snug irons.
Better to lose your stirrup 100 times than get caught up and dragged even once.
The rubber coverings generally add about 1/4", so a 4 3/4" HS-type jointed stirrup fits more like a 4 1/2".
Personally, I ride in non-jointed 4 1/4" irons (size 8 foot). I’m in the minority.
I am another vote for 4 1/4! I am a size 8 with a narrow foot and they fit me just fine. Most people that ride in my saddle comment on how tiny the irons are, but I think as long as your foot isnt jammed in the iron you’ll be just fine.
Can someone help me understand the following:
My irons measure 5’ all the way across on the bottom. If I only measure the part inside the iron (where the foot rests), it is 4 and 3/4. So, does that mean my stirrup iron size is a 4 and 3/4, or a 5?

4.75"
I’m another 4 1/4" rider! I’m a size 8, narrow foot, and these leave plenty of ‘safety’ room without feeling too big.
4 3/4 here. I have a size 9, B width foot.
ok, so I am a 4.75. That leaves a little over a quarter inch on each side. Can someone recommend a very good, traditional iron? I will use it for both equitation and jumping. Is the most traditional type called fillis?
Yes, fillis irons are the traditional irons.
I see that Korsteel makes fillis irons. Any other brands I should be considering? Or, are fillis irons pretty much similar?
The Korsteel ones are fine. I’ve had mine 15 years and they’re in perfect condition.
The Korsteel are great, just as nice as the Stubben or Sprenger Fillis irons IMO, and not nearly as expensive, I have them too.

Same here. Korsteel irons hold up really really well.
