Stirrup leathers - can't find the perfect type

I have standard old stirrup leathers on my jump saddle and they’re fine. For the dressage saddle I wanted something less bulky though, and went through Wintec webbers (fell apart fast), Bates webbers (ditto) and settled on Stubben Mono NT ones that are bottom adjust (conway buckle) and loop at the top.

Love those stirrup leathers. Until I have to adjust them at all, then they are a bugga! The conway buckle is just a real PITA.

Anyone got new faves to try? What about these Kieffer ones?

I really like the Prestige Ideal leathers. Think of them as high end webbers.

There is no bulk under your thigh and these last forever.

I have a set of Frank Baines Webber type leathers and love them! You can run them up. Not sure he still makes them, I’ve had mine a few years and they still look great with very little stretching.

I like Passier leathers https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/passier-nylon-lined-stirrup-leathers-6466?utm_source=cpc&utm_medium=google&utm_content=shopping&utm_campaign=nb_shopping_tes&utm_term=16466&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_o7NBRDgARIsAKvAgt0zKY6lTCdnd5BIE1s-Yj4AJ2VAIipKxzgyhFRsfDlWJt4HvpJz_AwaAqqVEALw_wcB not a big Kiefer fan

Another vote for Prestige Ideal.

peris I’ve always had great luck with leathers from Peri’s. Not so e xpensive but last forever

I have the Prestige ones and the Baines leather ones. Both are lovely and seem to be lasting very well.

I am sorry, I said Prestige and really wanted to say Passier. Passier Nylon lined Stirrup Leathers are my favorite leathers for my dressage saddle.

Prestige webbers!

Thanks everyone!

I liked them too until today, when I realized that my 3-year-old leathers had shredded their calfskin on the saddle side. They’re still safe enough due to the webbing but the shredded leather part is not good. Maybe all of them have a 3-year lifespan?

Hm. Anything wrapped seems to have a v short lifespan…

What on earth are you guys doing to your leathers? I’ve had Bates leather covered nylon webbers on my dressage saddle for at least three years. I ride 5 to 6 times a week. They still look relatively new.

The leather just wore through on mine in various places. Perhaps an earlier version with worse leather? My gear tends to last forever, in general - I’m not hard on stuff!

I have had my passier leathers for years and I torture them… No problems so far…
But the old fashioned dressage rider uses the real leather passier leathers anyhow… They last years and years and even though they are only leather never stretch

Are you looking for the Webber style? Or regular leathers, where you have a bit more bulk under your leg? I’ve tried every version of the Webber style I could find, and NONE of them lasted more then a year, and all were very hard to adjust while mounted. Finally broke down and got nylon core leather Bates classic style leathers (I prefer the nylon core because it doesn’t stretch) and have ridden in the same leathers for at least 5 years now. Currently 2 horses 5 times/week.

I have Passier leathers on my young horses saddle, and they are holding up well, but they are stretched so holes are not quite even. It doesn’t bother the trainer, but I do feel it when I ride in that saddle. Those leathers are several years old, now. I think on the 3rd youngster!

The trick is to find good quality (HS) buckles and a saddle with recessed stirrup bars - then you don’t feel the bulk so much under your leg.

They are leather on really tough nylon webbing, so they don’t stretch.

I don’t like the Webber style, personally. I have the Prestige regular version and love them. Very flat buckles so no bulk under your thigh, and nice soft, flexible and fairly thin leathers. Have only had them a few months and only ride 4-5 times/week so can’t comment on durability.

Yep, one of my pairs in about 5 1/2 years old, the other is newer because the horse has only been under saddle 4 years. But they last and are in good shape. My trainer rides in them frequently, too, and he often wears Mountain Horse Ice Rider boots which I would think would beat up on leather more than leather would - also no effects. The only change in them is the leather cover which slides over the buckle gets stretched, and you can buy replacements for that though I haven’t.

Gary Mundy makes what he calls “dressage style” stirrup leathers, which are constructed similar to webbers and the like. I just contacted him about ordering a pair myself… a COTH search will give you all the rave reviews if you haven’t heard of him and his infamous stirrup leathers!
