Thanks!

I found that the stirrup turners lowered my stirrups too far. (I’m short) so I did as another board user did, bought dog collars (leather not nylon)and put them on the same way you would the turners. Works great and saves lots of money.
I found stirrup turns hurt my ankles. I like the idea but I ride with my foot deep in the stirrup and this causes my angle to hit the turner which would in time cause a soar. I do ride in running shoes.
Hmmmm… good points. Never thought about the ankle hitting the metal turner and yes that would hurt.
I paid extra for shortened fenders so it would defeat the purpose to use something that would make them longer again. Leather dog collar - who would have thought! Will check this out!
Thanks!
I tried the dog collar thing, but it just made them too long again. I got the fenders shorted more, soaked them in water and turned them with a 2x4 and now they’re fine.

that only works if your saddle is leather. The abetta synthetics will not work like that
Dog collars
I use dog collars to turn my stirrups. On the Abetta I used synthetic collars and wrapped them around twice. Managed to lose them when I took them off while trying a new saddle (didn’t have enough holes punched in the leathers to account for the extra length).
So I bought some leather dog collars. Again, wrapped them around twice because the leather isn’t very strong. They stretched a bit, but are still good.
I do have regular stirrup turners. They did poke me in the shin until I shortened the bolt. The ones I have aren’t metal–they have a bolt and a leather cradle that the stirrup sits in. Can’t remember who makes them.

They have the annoying bang your shin problem for me also but at least they fit the oddball Abetta stirrup leathers. My metal ones wouldnt fit so I got a pair of these from Natl Bridle.
Hay
I got the stirrup turners and yes, they were $59 dollars  and they broke after 2 months of use!!! THe screw came right out and it has sheared off within the housing…Unfixable. I’m going to call the manufacturer and see if they’ll exchange and then try the tack store for recourse.
The stirrup literally fell off while I was mounting on the trail, had to go searching for washers and whatever in the leaves. Since I’m really only a trail meanderer, fine but imagine if someone was galloping and standing in the stirrups…Could have been a big problem.
They also did make my stirrups very long. I have long legs but the stirrup leathers were on the last hole. Someone shorter would be out of luck…
Pines, that same exact thing happened with me a few years ago, I would never use them again. Can’t you just take the fenders off, put on english leathers covered with sheepskin, and a stirrup you like.?
Hay 2
Thank you Bank of Dad. I was thinking of that this weekend. I have taken the stirrup turners off for now.
I’m just sick of shoddy workmanship, I mean two months! I am a manufacturer and how we fuss about quality and packaging. But why doesn’t anyone else? Why don’t they care about their consumers? It is just a wee bit annoying. I’ve varying degrees of trouble with shoddy workmanship recently with a few products I’ve bought including these turners. Oh well. Thanks for letting me vent.

Discovered that my saddle maker sells these turners as stated in the previous post (above). Am going to try them and see how the bolt affects me. Also got some 1.5" wide leather dog collars and they would have worked too - especially if I shortened them. But these turrners ended up $20 cheaper.
The bit about them failing while riding is seriously disconcerting, however!
The collars that I got were only about 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide and 16 inches long. I put them through the stirrups and then wrapped them around the fenders until they were very snug. Only cost me about $6.00 total. Sometimes you can get lucky and find them at the dollar store.
I rode in the saddle with the commercial stirrup turners yesterday. Even though I shortened the bolt, the darn things still poke me in the shin!
So I’m going to buy two more dog collars and use them to turn the stirrups. These stirrups are ones that came with a Bob Marshall saddle, and aren’t my favorite type. I put my good endurance stirrups on the Bob Marshall saddle, so the old Abetta saddle gets the BMSS stirrups. The Abetta saddle fits the little Arab mare I’m starting under saddle.
Hey, is there any interest in a “White Trash Saddle” thread like the old “White Trash Dressage” thread a year or so ago? I’m dying to talk about some of the modifications I’ve added to my saddle. They work great but look like hell!
