Stock Combo trailers (BP)

I have a GN that I pull with a 3/4 ton but I want a second trailer for various reasons. One reason is so it can be pulled with a 1/2 ton for evacuatoin, if I ever need to be rescued, etc, etc.

I’m in Texas (hot) and am considering a stock/combo type trailer for its openess. Does anyone have manufacturer/model recommendations for 2 horse? I would love a 4Star but can’t find one used.

If you have one, would you recommend to others?

Have you considered getting a customized regular stock trailer? I have a plain jane bumper pull stock trailer that I ordered with a 7 ft. ceiling height. It’s white, to make it brighter and hopefully less claustrophobic, and I put locking panels on the floor (don’t remember what they are, but not heavy rubber). I looked at a stock combo but didn’t like the swinging divider because it took up too much room and I didn’t really need it. I don’t haul much, mostly just trips to the vet, and it suits my needs perfectly. The horses like it too.

I have a Bee stock combo trailer. They have several options. In a pinch I can squeeze at least 3 horses in there. Shadow trailers are another good option. I’ve known several people with them. Trailers USA is good as well.

I’ve got a Jackson – it’s a GN, but they build BP trailers, as well. First learned of this brand here on CoTH (there are several older threads).

Mine is a 2015, and it’s very well built, and holding up great.

I have an ancient gooseneck aluminum Featherlite (1999) stock trailer, that after an acid wash, new mats and installation of LED lights, still looks brand new. Honestly, it is the one piece of equipment on the farm that we could not do without.

I do not know if new Featherlites are as well built as this one, and while it is not as heavy duty as say an Eby trailer, it is safe for the horses, cattle and hogs we haul on it.

Ours is 16’ on the floor, and although it is not a stock combo, I can still store things in the neck behind a calf gate.

I have yet to have a horse refuse to get on it, and have even loaded a totally feral horse on it twice. It would be my go to trailer in any emergency.

That being said, if you can find a trailer with the dimensions that work for you, I would say go for it. Right now though, I think prices are rather salty, especially on used trailers. Mine is currently valued at twice what I paid for it in 2011.

I just sold my Sundowner 2H BP stock combo. Great trailer, only sold it because I upgraded to a 4H 4Star.

I have a steel Delta stock/combo that I bought new 8 years ago. It was very, very economical and it does the job, but you get what you pay for (not a surprise). It’s a 2h, only 12 or 13’ long and 6’ wide. Very handy to maneuver.

I end up leaving the divider out more often than not because my main riding horse is too big to use it as a slant. It probably has been used to haul more “other stuff” than horses; we’ve used it to move 3 times, use it for hay, use it for the lawnmower, etc.

I love having the storage space in the nose. I’m mixed on it being a swing wall, though. I’ve opened the whole thing up to haul large stuff like my carriage and that’s really handy, but as a tack room, it gets pretty dirty no matter what you do. A dirty tack room is better than no tack room, though.

As for whether or not it’s cooler, it’s definitely cooler than something with no air flow. But not as cool as a high end insulated trailer with fans.

I bought a used Circle J about 6yrs ago.
I think Mfr is from OK - have to check the plate.
IIRC, it’s a 1997 model.
16’, 7’ wide & high, w/center gate.
Plexiglas panels that can close off the side openings. I generally slide these forward, horse travels in back, behind the gate.
Mostly used to haul my mini & his cart(s) - I’ve had 2 carts up front, mini in back.
If I’m hauling the 16h horse he goes behind the gate too.
It’s my 1st stock type (had 3 before: 2 GN) & so useful I’d never go back to an enclosed trailer.

What about storage? Do most people store their trailers under cover? Mine is out in the open. I added windows to reduce the amount of rain making it inside the trailer itself.

I’ve had my Exiss stock combo for 22 years now and it is still a fantastic trailer
One of the things I love about it the most is that, out of all the trailers I’ve hauled which is A LOT, the horses seem happiest in this one. Weirdly it’s also the easiest trailer to get hard loaders on to-

Mine was store outside. It came with slats to close in the stock openings so you could enclose the trailer.

Mine is out in the open, and I don’t have many issues with water or snow. The inside might get slightly wet close to the openings, but my opens are high up.

Ours in not under cover.
