I know that a plain, unadorned pin is correct. My husband, whom I love dearly, gifted me with one that is simple, and not very big, probably around 3/4 inch long, with a killer solid, tie tack type “pin” device. Ok so far, but it’s actually a row of five square diamonds. I would not wear it on a formal day. It would please him if I wore it, it would please me to wear it. Short of people thinking “I hope she has it insured” would anyone really bat an eye? One of our MFH regularly wears some damn good sized diamond studs even on formal days. I’m having lunch with her Monday, so before I ask permission, I’d see what you all think. I’ve always gotten compliments on my turn out, even from the most strict, I’d like to at least wear it once, so it will have hunted as he intended.
Fire away.
I thought that dress rules are not as strict during cub hunting, so it seems some understated bling would not be out of place.
But do ask…
It doesn’t seem efficient to me. Because you know a stock pin should double as a safety pin used on your stock tie in case you need a bandage or sling. I’d probably build a hunt breakfast outfit around it, using it on a thin scarf.
Has anyone actually ever noticed another person’s stock pin!!!
For crying out loud. Wear the lovely pin and make your husband happy.
: )
For crissakes.
I have hunted for 45 years, 5+ times a week sometimes, and have never actually used my stock tie. I know it happens … but for goodness sakes, if someone needs to make a sling out of a stock and pin, they can use someone else’s.
Wear the pin and have fun. : )

If someone did notice it then it is too much. Hunt turnout should be workmanlike and not call attention to itself.
and as far as using it, hunt members in my hunt used their ties and pins and crops to splint my shattered wrist in 06 and have done so for a couple of other members over the years.
When my DH was deployed one of the last few times to the UAE, he asked me what could he bring me jewelry wise. I asked him for a stock pin. Well, bless him, he started out trying to get the jeweler to make me a simple stock pin and it turned into a work of art. It’s 18 kt solid gold, has fox mask in the middle and a horse head and a fox mask on either side. It is truly gorgeous but really more of a brooch than a pin. I wouldnt’ dare wear it hunting, God forbid I should lose it, and I’m staff anyway. But I do bring it to Opening, and Closing Hunt and Boxing Day and wear it to the breakfast.
Oh, hail. Wear it. Pleasing your husband is waaay more important than caring about what others out hunting think. I probably wouldn’t wear it regularly- as noted if pins are ‘needed’ you’d want to be able to contribute to the cause but not worry about whether you get a plain pin back- but I would sure wear it now and then.
My wife applies the galloping horse test. If you notice what someone is wearing as they gallop by then you are paying attention to the wrong thing.
Wear it!
Wear it and enjoy it. I’ve been wearing a stock pin with a crystal etching of a horse for decades. My grandfather gave it to me when I was a kid. It does get compliments on a regular basis. It has a very sharp point and a secure clasp, or I wouldn’t use it.
I use hidden safety pins to keep the stock in place, so there isn’t pressure on it. I have never had to use my stock for emergencies wrapping. I do also carry a linen pressed handkerchief, which has been useful for nosebleeds and other assorted damage after trappy runs.
This.
Wear it and have fun–and what a thoughtful hubby you have!!
Go for it!
Wear it and be wonderful!!
And if anyone gets close enough to see it…I’m sure they’ll be envious as I would be. Nobody notices these things until we’re all at a hunt breakfast during formal season anyway.
Gosh sometimes we take outselves WAAAAAYYY to seriously! Where’s my plastic dinosaur? My hunting princess tiara? My Snobbington Hunt special saddle pad?!!:D:D:D:D
I’m something of a turnout snob but even I wear a looney tunes tie for cubbing.
I hunt with Foghorn Leghorn, Wile E. Coyote, Marvin Martian and Bugs Bunny.
I think you’ll be fine, just don’t lose it! What will hubby say!! We offer turnout advice on this forum, not marriage counseling!
As always, thanks guys.
I’m going to wear it and enjoy it. It’s both insured, and truly, easily replaced. Hubby saw it first as a pendant, and realizing I seldom wear them, had our family jeweler remake it into a stock pin, with a super duper tie tack type pin, the pin part being both long enough, and stout enough to pierce the stiffest of stocks.
And while it wouldn’t function in an emergecy like a regular stock pin for actually holding a sling in place, as my sister says, “you could signal the space shuttle with those diamonds”. So, useful as well as pretty.
I wear real, long, four fold stock ties. What I can’t pin, I can bind and knot. The damn ER staff cuts everything off anyway. No need asking how I know, no need at all.
My wedding ring and engagement ring however, cannot be replaced, so they stay home. My husband bought me a simple Welsh gold band to wear out hunting, so if it’s lost, or, ehem, removed by ER staff, no big deal. I told him it really wasn’t necessary, but he figured out that unlike the H/J and dressage world, male foxhunters and eventers tend to be straight. He insisted that it has more value on my hand than off. Proprietary, but sweet, so I wear it.
Now you have to come to Va. with the DH, so we can properly “ooo” and “ahhh” over it! Of course, we will coo to your DH how wonderful he is to have selected such a wonderful gift for his beautiful Bride. And his wisdom in realizing that his beautiful Bride loves foxhunting. We are happy for you!!
WG is envious!
I…want…your…husband…
Keeper!!
WG, you have to wait in line…
As our former MFH, Carol, my dearest friend, has first right of refusal (and trust me, she won’t) if anything happens to me. Now, she’s 20 years my senior, and I’m 10 years younger than my husband, but, I foxhunt, and on the rare occasion that I come off, it’s usually in a spectacular fashion. So, if you want to be second on the list, you can. He is the most wonderful man on the planet, and spoils not only me, but my horses and the rest of our pets completely rotten. He’s charming, funny, thoughtful. If he were a horse, he’d be the best Thoroughbred you ever knew.
Trust me, at my funeral, there will be a line of single gals from the hunt queing up to give my husband their, uh, condolances.
Put me on the list, too, please. : )
A ‘Thoroughbred’ man. Sigh. <3<3<3
lol. omg this is the funniest thread ever.
He’s certainly a keeper

 Brilliant!
Uh, are you falling off your horse or are the hunt ladies pushing you off to increase their chances of moving ahead in the queue?
