stock ties

I love to sew and think it would be fun to try making custom stock ties to sell. Somewhere I have a Suitability pattern that includes a stock tie, but I don’t know how “current” the style is. So a few questions:

  1. Are traditional (untied) stock ties lined–i.e., made of 2 layers so no raw edges show?

  2. Is the shape of a traditional stock tie just a long rectangle? Some look like they have a narrower neck, others just a rectangle.

  3. What are suitable fabrics? Cotton of course, but how about silk or other fabrics?

  4. Would there be a market for “custom” traditional stock ties or is this a ridiculous idea? (be kind…)

TIA!

I have a custom stock tie made by someone in England. It was a gift. LOVE this tie.

The area around the neck is not as wide as the rest. The material is a silky material that is really washable. A requirement as far as I am concerned. It has some fake pearls that show just a bit when tied properly.

Don’t know if there is a market. You might try making a few and taking them to a few shows to see if there is interest.

Some folks like the pretied ones. I like the ones you have to tie (hate it when velcro from the back of the ‘fake’ ones attaches to my hair net…

So, for about every person you will have specific preferences. Have samples. Offer to custom make them.

Some people prefer the traditional stock tie; others prefer pre-tied with fancier fabrics and pleats, piping, trims, the works!

I have the best one. It’s a pre-tied one connected to a dickie shirt front. Closes with velcro behind the neck. With this I can wear a tee shirt and just put this over it. Can’t tell it’s not traditional once you don a jacket. Everyone who sees it wants one. Make something like that and I bet you’ll sell a lot!

If you can make something similar cheaper, let me know, I might be interested in stocking yours

My favorite place to shop for unique custom ties is Dara James Designs.

Stock ties are a fun and affordable way to change your show look and think you would definitely have a market for it.

You know advertising your own business is specifically against forum rules, don’t you?

I’m kind of obsessed with Style Stock’s inventory. All. Of. It.

Check out Dameron. It’ll give you even more to obsess with. And wish dressage were more liberal with colors/patterns, since she makes for other disciplines, too…

Thanks for the info, everyone!
