Wow.
I was hoping for a happy update, but this is disturbing. I think most people would be quite satisfied for the return of the foal and appropriate punishment that fits the crime.
As awful as this would be to experience, death is way overboard.

Yeah this is about perception, to you this is probably just a property crime, the loss is the cost of the foal. To me, this would be kidnapping and murder of a child in my family, exactly the kind of one-in-a-billion lethal force situation that we’ve trained for. Steal my truck, I’ll call the police from the living room, but steal my family member and I will use everything in my power to stop that person. The person who did this is evil, and I’m sure if the rancher had caught them they’d have shot them too.
