Stomach Ulcers

So lately I’ve been hearing a lot of people talk about stomach ulcers in horses and I’m just wanting to understand more about them. It would be great if you could tell me more about them. I do have one question, could stomach ulcers be the cause of a horse losing weight and not going aiming it back easily?
Also I have heard some people say that you can treat stomach ulcers with aloe vera juice and chai seeds. If that true? Thanks!

Yes, weight loss can be caused by ulcers. No, you cannot treat them with aloe and chia.

The nexium thread may be of interest and will come up with a basic search. Or it’s probably within the first few pages of this forum.

My rescue was thin and showing minor colic signs a few weeks after I got him. The vet suspected ulcers and had me give him a full tube of ulcergard. (Hes a 1200lbs TB) and within two days he was a completely different horse! He has been gaining beautifully ever since. The tube was $33, best money I have spent since having him.

A treatment of omeprazole (Ulcergard/Gastrogard) is 28 days. A single tube won’t heal any ulcers the horse has…that’s just not the way the drug and the body work. If the horse improved after a single dose, it was due to something else.

The nexium thread may be of use to you, too. Let me go grab a link.

There’s probably a dozen or more threads discussing ulcers that you should be able to easily search for.

Ulcers can cause a myriad of issues, from weight loss/inability to gain, to colic, to behavioral problems. Existing ulcers must be treated with omeprazole or ranitidine. They can be prevented with a diet free of corn and molasses and with free-choice hay, or supplementing with things such as aloe vera juice.

Thanks for the link @Simkie, I’m going to give this a try with my new kid. I’m certain his tummy hurts and have been agonizing about how expensive GG is but still wanting to treat him.

Thank you! I will definitely check out the fourm linked.
