When traveling with your horses, how do you store your different supplements? I’m not sure of best way. Baggies pre-measured that I dump on their grain? Containers with lids for each individual supplement? I have a large bucket with a tight screw off lid that I use for grain. I have plenty of storage for the feed/supplements so space is not a concern. I typically haul just one horse (the same one each time) but occasionally I’ll take multiple horses. Just curious what others do to stay organized with their supplements when traveling. Thanks for any advise!
I make baggies (same as at home), as well as bring extra of each feed type in extra large ziplock (beet pulp, rice bran), and electrolytes/loose salt (in original buckets) all in a heavy duty storage box, the kind with a hinged lid. Keeps everything contained in one space, not hard to access, doubles as a seat too! I tried smaller and cheaper boxes, but they didn’t hold up. And I don’t want separate supplement containers, just keep it simple when traveling.
Ok I like the idea of baggies then in a storage box all together, that makes sense to me. I thought of using baggies but then wasn’t sure on next step. I’ll have to look for some type of storage box that will fit in my trailer. I have storage under the mangers so maybe something tall but narrow. Thanks for the idea!
As for storage options, I’d look at the dog food containers… usually square with a flip lid. I make “baggie meals”, and mark them AM/PM, They are all together in a bucket with a lid (I like the square ones). I also feed soaked cubes and they are in a separate plastic tub and I measure them out as needed
Good idea on the dog food containers! Sounds like baggies are the way to go, just need to find a good container. Thanks for the tip!
for a while I had these teeny little rubbermaid containers for supps, but as time passes, I’m more into simpler… so now I just premix the ration balancer with all supps in a galllon ziploc bag.
I got one of those screw on water proof style lids for the big home depot buckets and I can fit everything in there for 4 days, easy. He gets soaked alf cubes in the AM and ration balancer+supps/beer in the PM and that all fits in the bucket and the bucket fits in little unused spaces in the trailer quite nicely (and when you have as much equipment as I do, that counts for something!)
I love using buckets with those lids on them! I use several of them. It gives me peace of mind to put my fly spray supplies in one of the buckets. Thanks for your ideas!
