Storing jump poles upright in arena corners?

Wasn’t sure if I’d get more traction here or in the h/j forum but… here goes.

I have been going back and forth for LITERALLY years on how to store my poles at my outdoor arena. Since my posts are 10’ apart and my poles are 10’, I can’t hang them on the fence posts. Drats! I have tossed around a few different ideas for storing outside the arena but off the ground, something like this but cut in half and steeper has been the prevailing winner:

But my arena was partially cut in so I only have a few spots that are level outside of the arena AND do I really want to create more irregular mowing/weedeating areas? I keep looking at the corners thinking I could drill holes in a barrel and just huck the poles into a barrels in the corners???

My arena. The flattish spots are right near the gate which is top middle, and then all along the short side on the left, and that is IT, the long side on the bottom is a steep drop off and the short side on the right is moderately steep up.

What say you, greater COTH? I really need to pick something soon and honestly my brain is TIRED.

If you would hang them from your fence posts but can’t because of spacing, have you thought about just…dropping in another couple posts along the fence line, so you can store your poles?

That does seem like a handy solution to have them there & off the ground.

I think aesthetically random posts would bother me? But if that’s the best solution, so be it.

Do it on both sides of the gate, so it’s balanced?

How many poles are you talking about?
Go to several trailer places and look for a used one something like this that will fit how many posts you want to store.
A little trailer may not look too bad and you can move it to kill weeds underneath or change places you store it:

I currently have… 12. Making about 12 or 16 more.

I like that little trailer tho, but I’m scared to see what shipping would be :grimacing:

You may need a bit bigger one with many poles.
No shipping if you have a place close that sells all kinds of utility trailers, like for landscaping.
They also sell trailer chassis, which is all you would need.

Like what, a Tractor Supply? I said, my brain is tired :joy: I can’t idea anymore.

Trailer stores, where landscapers, builders, salesmen, agricultural, dump trailers, all kinds of trailer are sold in trailer stores, also used ones.
Machinery and farm auctions, scrap metal places, agricultural tractors and plow stores, they have old trailers.

TS, Home Depot and Lowes also have flatbed trailers, but not generally used ones.
Used would be much cheaper for an old trailer you are not going to drag down highways.

Could you build little platforms on your fence posts, or use jump cups, to store them between your posts like jumps?

I don’t think I would store poles upright. You would need to secure the barrel so it doesn’t tip, and I think you would have the risk of the poles sort of wedging against each other at the bottom and being hard to pull out. I would have some sort of hooks/ledge on the outside of your fence, but that somehow allows you to pull the poles in from inside the ring.

Remind me your arena fence construction, and if the horizontal rails are run on the inside or the outside?

This was my thought too, jump cups or J hooks or pegs along the fence line.

Something like this might also work: https://boratool.com/6-level-lumber-storage-rack-black-gray.html

Good idea, except the arena posts are 10’ between posts, jump poles are 10’ and adding other in between has been nixed as not aesthetically acceptable.

If not for that, great, put those kinds of brackets on existing posts on the outside of arena.

J hooks would not work when the pole is the width of the space between the posts.

That’s why I said build a little platform or use jump cups, on the inside of the posts not the faces. To store the poles between posts, not hanging on the face of the posts.

Right, but if the arena posts are on 10’ centers, the middle distance from post to post will be less than the 10’ length the poles are, unless she cuts the poles to fit that distance to fit the brackets/jump cups to rest them on, between posts?

My reading was that the posts are 10’ apart, which to me means there’s 10’ between the posts, not that they’re 10’ on center. 10’ on center does leave a little bit of overlap enough that they can be mounted on brackets on the faces.

Well yes, but not clear if measurements were exact dimensions, ten feet might be middle to middle of the post, so the rails are a couple inches too long. Or hooks could hang on the boards rather than posts. In any case, it would either work or it won’t.

@TheJenners, I’ve seen one place that fashioned U-shaped holders from wooden blocks and put them on top of the fence posts so the rails were stored one by one along the top of the fence line, but that might be too high for easy handling.

Okay to answer a few questions. My brain is tired but my arms and legs work… I carried poles around the arena and set them down around between all the posts. There are exact 11 spots, not counting corners, where the poles overlap the post centers by a bit. I’ve attached most of the examples but then I got distracted by a snake and started playing with that and anyway… my brain is tired. There are 11 spots. More if you think I can use the corners, obviously. Also my fence construction, it’s wood that needs paint and cenflex.
