Storing tack for long period of time?

I’m pregnant and won’t be riding for several months. Am I better off moving my tack into my basement versus letting it sit in the barn? My tack room isn’t climate controlled so without regular cleaning every thing will get covered in mold. If it’s in the house with A/C on, should I plan on conditioning it regularly or will it be fine sitting?

Thanks!

For sure at home, it shouldn’t need any regular conditioning.

I would not let my stuff get moldy.

Get it in good condition cleaning wise then put it in the basement. I would make sure it gets some air flow, though. A fan on a timer would be fine, and set it somewhere you see it often…you don’t want to learn that a mouse found it months after the fact

An advantage of having a large house with extra rooms we have two rooms full of tack some not being touched in years (decades?) that all is in very good condition. All tack is either hung (bridle racks) or on saddle racks…nothing is being kept in air tight plastic containers

Keeping in a climate controlled area (including humidity) seems to put the tack into hibernation

It will be fine sitting in your house for a few months. My spare tack has been in Rubbermaid bins in my closet for a few years… I do peek at it every 6 months or so and I condition everything maybe once a year.

I actually keep all of my tack at home with the A/C on. Stuff I don’t use for a while I store in bins, which 173north also suggested. I don’t want anything expensive getting ruined.

Thank you for the advice! I spent the other morning taking apart and cleaning and conditioning all of my tack and have it stored in a spare closet in the basement
