I’m sorry to hear this. Did the vet mention Gabapentin for the nerve pain? I suppose you’ve tried this, but will she eat a mash that’s soupy enough to slurp?
Still jingling. I get how hard it is to watch and not be able to “fix” them.
She did not mention that but I’m going to chat with her again this week and see if that’s an option. Thank you
Oh gosh not the update I was hoping to see. She’s lucky to have you as an advocate and I hope that you find a way to manage her discomfort.
So sorry you’re dealing with this. Just wanted to say that, like FrugalAnnie, I have had success using CBD oil for head shaking. If this is mechanical due to the C5/C6 situation, it may not be comparable, but certainly worth a try.
Fingers crossed.
What about some sort of PEMF therapy or class IV laser to support the injection???
Perhaps try the nose net on her halter while feeding. Lots of anecdotal reports that this helps block the nerve firing.
Just want to update that my mare’s symptoms have completely resolved five days after starting her on oral CBD oil. Thank you @frugalannie for the suggestion. She is also ten days post neck injections. I think the combination of the two therapies is what did it for her, since one week post injections she was still very symptomatic, but she started showing significant improvement at day 3 of getting the CBD.
I am giving her 1 ml daily of CBD oil. I know it’s not legal for showing but this mare primarily is a foxhunter and trail horse so that is not a factor. Now it’s just wait and see how long the relief lasts.
Thank you to everyone who had ideas!
Awesome news!!!
I was just reading this thread and was apprehensive about how this would turn out. Am so glad the CBD oil and injections have relieved her symptoms! She’s a beautiful mare and very fortunate to have you as her Horse Mom.
Plus, this is good information to share with anyone else who has a horse with these peculiar symptoms.
She’s a beautiful mare. Looks like mare I had years ago. I’m so happy she is doing better!
I hope this therapy keeps her feeling healthy! And I must say you are my role model for turnout, you both look fab.
