Stretching an english girth

So, I bought a new girth for my horse and I decided to get the really nice Coolmax kind with the “clik” buckles. I got out my old girth (that I bought used) and checked the tag. It said 48 inches, so I bought a 48 inch girth. Well, I should have actually measured the old girth because it must have stretched before I bought it. My new girth doesn’t fit. I have used it with girth extenders so there isn’t an option for me to return it. I could keep using the extenders, but I don’t like using them. Does anyone know of a way to speed up the stretching process of the elastics? Thanks.

In my opinion, if you don’t like the extenders, sell the girth you have and buy a new one that fits better.

Just gave the elastic replaced with longer elastic same as you would do when the elastic starts to wear out. Personally I would just buy a new girth though.

I have two of the Lettia clik girths, and I love them. However, they do run a bit short as you have noticed. You could have a tack repair person replace the elastic with a longer length, but you would lose the clik buckles unless you asked the repair person to put them on the new elastic. That would be labor-intensive, though, and probably would be an expensive repair.

I echo those who advise you to sell it for what you can get and buy a longer one.

I just realized you could get away with replacing the elastic on only one side, but I still fear it would not be cost-effective.

Sell the girth and buy one in the right size. Elastic becomes less sound as it stretches, so you don’t want to be intentionally stretching it.
