I need to update my hunt coat selection and am slightly hard to fit (wide shoulders, deep chest with no bust to speak of). I LOVE my Pikeur Sarissa jumper coat-- the fit and comfort is amazing, but it’s definitely not going to cut it in the equitation/hunter rings. I’d love to find a coat similar to it. Any ideas? What do you like? What brand should I avoid? Sizing is so odd and confusing too-- any insights? I wear a 12-14 in American sizing of clothing.
I really liked my RJ classics coat. The newer one with the stretchy material.
Im built like a linebacker. Especially when I have my winter weight on. I bought another RJ classics coat that’s a 14 and almost too snug in the shoulders. It wasn’t the technical fabric.
I also have a Winston show coat, it’s super beautiful, looks like wool but it isn’t. I can still squeeze into it. Even with the 30lb weight gain*
Kerrits Stretch Competitor! I used to hate wearing my hunt coat because it always pinched in the shoulders and limited my range of motion no matter what size I ordered. This is easily the most comfortable coat I’ve ever worn, and the price is reasonable.
If Pikeur fits, why not find one of their hunt coats that is more conservative? I ride jumpers so I can’t speak to hunter coats but I also have wide shoulders. RJ and AA fit quite well and are stretchy.
I’m a convert to the AA Motionlite coats after getting one this summer. They should be fine in the hunter ring, but I’m an eventer so I can’t attest to that
PS - you can get them online from the UK for much cheaper! I got mine for about $170 from this place: https://www.corkfarmequestrian.co.uk/products/horseware-aa-platinum-ladies-motionlite-motion-lite-mesh-competition-jacket?variant=31537032101959
I have a brown and a dark green RJ Monterrey. Light, stretchy but very classic otherwise. They aren’t cheap but I found both mine 1/2 price. They run big. I’d try a 12.
Have you tried men’s coats? I have a friend with a straight build and she usually ends up in a men’s coat.
I own two different RJ stretch coats and like both a lot, especially for the price ($260 apiece, maybe?). I have semi-broad shoulders but they are cut pretty traditionally with princess bust seams.
RJ Classics; I think they run big. you can often find them used for a great deal
I’m a huge fan of my AA motionlite.
Grand Prix coats work for me and are generally not ridiculously expensive. But I have to custom order tall sizes. I recently got an Animo jacket (3 button) on a killer sale from a European tack shop after trying some on to figure out my size. It’s a little snug in the shoulder but has enough give while still looking fitted enough through the body. And I can fit in the normal height size which was a bonus for me. They definitely have some models that are not hunter ring appropriate.
You may also be able to find a more hunter ring type Pikeur for less money ordering abroad if you know your Pikeur size already.
I asked my mom for one of these for Christmas and while I haven’t shown in it yet, it is very comfy and inexpensive. I tend to have a linebacker shoulder problem too, even when I weighed 110.

Ooh, I should prob mention that Piper has very long sleeves! I will have to shorten mine a good bit, but just FYI
Another vote for the AA Motionlites. They are very stretchy and breathable and have several color options for hunters and jumpers.
Long arms & no bust describes me too. I don’t own one but have tried on several Kingsland coats and they are a great fit for that description. They have this one (https://www.ridingwarehouse.com/Kingsland_Almansa_Woven_Softshell_Show_JacketCoat/descpage-KALM.html) at Riding Warehouse for a reasonable price that is a conservative style.
I have an AA Motionlite I actually want to sell. The sleeves are not long enough for long arms IME.
The AA motion lite didn’t work for me. I still had to size up for the shoulders, and the rest looked frumpy. And still too short. It looks beautiful on my friend who has a more petite frame.
I have the older version of this that I picked up at their clearance sale the other year. It was so cheap I figured I’d keep it in the trailer as an emergency spare for bad weather etc. Ended up loving it and wear it all the time!
Try the AA Motionlites and the RJ Harmony for something a little nicer. I was on the fence between the two of them, but after trying them on, went with the RJ–I found the fit NQR for me in the AAs, and the sleeves on the RJs are nice and long.
Spooks! omg you feel like you’re riding in a zip hoodie they are so comfortable. and they look great in the ring. I get compliments all the time. After I bought one I ended up getting two more I loved them so much.

I would second Spooks as well! Very comfortable and stretchy. My original I bought in 2011 and I still get asked if it’s a new hunt coat. Mine is black with white pipe, although that may be too flashy for the hunters.
