String cooler

looking for an old skool string cooler, has anyone seen them for sale? Alternatively if anyone has a good picture of one so I can try to find an old one in the bottom of someone’s tack trunk - most of the local crowd look at me with a blank look when I mention them

Do you have a bad picture of one (you are asking for a good picture of one) so we know what you are talking about?
I am old and I am not sure what you mean by a string cooler. I am guessing it is just a term I do not know for a product I do know.
I assume you are not talking about something like an Irish Knit?

I assume you ARE talking about an Irish knit, which can still be found. Try that search term instead.

the ones with the big holes - about the size of nickle - kinda looks like fish net stockings only thicker string, tried looking under irish knit and I just keep finding the cottony mesh type ones. I don’t have a bad pic either

I know what you mean but I haven’t seen one for sale in years. They were great to put under wool coolers to help the horse dry.SS2a

Irish knit or scrim cooler is probably what you are looking for.

that’s it - thanks so much!

I like Jack’s Irish Knit Anti-Sweat Coolers

@sherian, I have a pony-sized one that I used for my little Arabian mare, if you’re looking for a small one.

I used them under coolers, too. Sped up the drying time for my (figurative) unclipped yaks in the winter!

I also have a small pony sized one. Be happy to find it a new home.

The brand name for these coolers that I recall from years ago was “Aerborne” - made in the UK I’m pretty sure. I just did a Google search for them and got nada.

It’s a pity no one seems to make them any longer as they work very well. (I still have mine - one is an XLarge that would fit a moose and the other is a Large that I picked up maybe 10 years ago for $5. to $10. (CDN) in a bargain bin at a sale.)

thanks but I have draft crosses

good to know - that style will be option B I think

So I used Google Lense to search this picture. After sorting out the dachshund pictures :face_with_monocle: it seems that the UK version of Shires USED to have this cooler.

OP: maybe get on some UK or Irish used tack sites or Facebook pages? The people who used them when I was younger were British, had strong Pony Club roots or had worked over in Europe for a period of time.

good idea - we have some Brits here that I can ask

@4horses and @SummerRose, I too, happen to have pony-sized Arabians (all roughly in the 68-72 blanket range) and would be happy to take your Irish knits off your hands!

Sold, so not helpful:

I really didn’t think this would be that hard to find because I still see people using them. Mainly at the track.

You can find many, many knit scrim sheets with the smaller holes if you’re willing to settle for one of those.

That’s what I won as EOY Reserve AA… In 1990🤭
It was useful in Winter under a wool cooler & in Summer by itself, after bathing.
But even Older School:
Stuffing hay under the wool in cold weather.
Insulates while it lets a sweaty horse dry & Bonus Points! they can eat the hay after.
My smartass TB figured out how to reach around & grab a snack while he cooled out :smirk:

Stopping by to say I used to make these for my Breyer horses by cutting up the mesh laundry bags my mother had for her delicates.

Which I realize is not especially helpful in sourcing a full-size version. But is at least validation that they exist(ed).
