Stroller for a big dog?

Can anyone recommend a good stroller for a 50-pound dog? this would be used on city streets. The dog is a Weimaraner type of dog, so it has to accommodate her height.

She has really bad hip dysplaysia but we can’t bear to leave her home alone.

This is crazy expensive, but something like this?

No, it has to be something we can push along at a good clip. There are some with three wheels, but they seem to be unstable if the dog is moving around.

I thought of that! But we live on a hill and have to drive down to the flats to walk the dogs if we have the stroller with us, so it has to be something I can store in the back of my car.

That one does have three wheels, but it sounds like we’re talking about the same sort of thing.

I’d think it would be pretty imperative to teach the dog to sit or lie quietly, regardless of what you find. 70 pounds of dog moving about is going to cause problems in just about anything.

Would she be amenable to a wheeled cart to take the weight off of her hind end?

That was going to be my suggestion–if you were going to spend the money on a big stroller, why not a chair that she can still touch her feet to the ground in (more of a neuro one than a trauma styled one) that just keeps her from collapsing; or depending on how bad it is, a help me up harness she can wear around the hind end and you can catch her rear if she dips? I know the large dog carts can be great things, there’s a bouvier that comes to my clinic for rehab who’s been in one for 7 years.

I know I’m answering questions that you didn’t ask but just tossing that out there because I know nothing about large strollers.

Jeep makes a three wheeled stroller that is very sturdy. I have one that is supposed to be for larger dogs but I never tried it on anything larger than 30 pounds because it was for my Peke and my little dog to ride together on long walks.

Looks like this - I bought mine off Ebay for less.

Anything here look good? They have one with 4 wheels for full body assistance.

Excellent work, COTH personal shoppers! We watched some of those dog wheelchair videos. That might be worth the extra $$$.

How about a Radio Flyer wagon with the wooden slat sides??

I bought a stroller about a year ago for my 40lb 12 year old Sussex Spaniel who was having trouble keeping up with my 75 lb clumber on walks. Here is Wilson Sussex in the stroller http://www.pbase.com/finnskeeper/wilson_wheels it is the Pet Gear jogger stroller and is rated for dogs up to 70 lbs. I have used it a lot and it is great! Tragically my 75 lb, 11 year old clumber ended up getting Lymphoma and dying a few months ago and I even used it for him that last week with no issues. Its an extremely stable stroller and handled the weight well. My dogs love to get in and ride. The one issue may be lifting the dog in (my dogs breeds are long with short legs). I found the stroller plenty large enough for even the larger Clumber. Its really hot here in Florida and its so nice to have this all the time to give oldster Wilson Sussex, now 13 years old, a break on walks when he needs it. The wheels are great and roll well on all types of terrain, though I do find I have to put air in them about once a week or so.

I tried several jogger models before buying and found that with my dogs they hated riding in the type that is pulled behind. They want to be pushed in front with their nose in the wind  Just a caveat if shopping for different types of strollers.

We have this one, that we use for our 45lb ACD mix.

It could hold a much bigger/heavier dog. The price was right and it works fine. It’s like a jogging stroller, where the front wheel doesn’t turn, so you have to lift the front a little around turns, not a problem with a dog of this size. It converts to a bike trailer without a lot of fiddling around, which is also handy.

Our old dog likes to go for walks, but can’t always make it home, so I’m often pushing the empty stroller “there” and she’s riding in it “back”. She likes it, she willingly gets in it when she gets tired and sore.

Marla, we used a wagon for my old lab X who jumped down a retaining wall and blew out her tendons. It worked fine, but that was ten years and a bad shoulder ago, so I don’t think we could pull it. We still have it!

I think I’m going to try one of the wheelchair contraptions so she can go under her own power, and if that doesn’t work, I will get her a big stroller.

Paula, your dogs are too sweet looking!

We have a feed cart that might work. It has 2 big bicycle wheel and the “box” is 2.5’x4’x 14" deep. You could probably rig a “steerable” wheel at the rear. You might want to check out garden cats/wagons.
