I have two mares that I am breeding this season. One is 16 and one is 6. They are both maiden mares. Both mares hemorrhaged into their follicles on the first breeding attempt. I was shocked to learn that they both had simultaneously produced anovulatory hemorrhagic follicles and it made me wonder if something in their environment could have caused that to happen. ?? My vet also thought it was unusual and couldn’t provide an explanation for why this could have happened. For reference, the 16 year old was not short cycled but the 6 year old was short cycled with Estrumate. The mares are on pasture currently and they get beet pulp supplemented with fish oil, vitamin e and selenium. I can’t think of anything that they could have been exposed to that might have messed with their cycles. I am wanting to try again this season. Can anyone chime in with their experience dealing with AHFs? Has anyone gotten a pregnancy in subsequent cycles after an AHF? This is my first time breeding, so naturally I’m getting a little stressed and worried.

I did but I threw in the towel. History - Nine year old maiden mare short cycled and came back in heat. Inseminated pre-ovulation and then just as she was ovulating. I think she was at 35 when she ovulated. No post insemination inflamation or pooling and everybody thought she would be pregnant when she was checked at 16 days. Nope.
So took her back to vet 20? days later. Building a follicle. Building. Building. Follicle got to be 60? and she never ovulated. Took her home. Next month same thing.
Gave up for the year. Tried the next Spring. Same thing. E-mailed Kathy at Equine Reproduction and tried what she suggested. Still building huge follicles and no ovulation. I gave up since I decided that was all the money I could spend on this venture. I wish I had a foal from this mare but I did not have unlimited funds.
I hope you have better luck than I did. Oh and semen was fabulous. Sold the last dose to a friend and bingo her mare was pregnant. Sigh!!!
