Stubben Biomex Seats

I have a bad back …had a L5/S1 microdiscectomy 3 yrs ago and had been doing great until recently started having sciatic nerve pain again …I have and love my County Innovations but I was thinking of trying a Stubben with the Biomex seat …,is there a particular model that’s comparable to the Innovation?? Or any Stubben recommendations in general with the Biomex seat that are super comfortable with nice leather for horse & rider ?!?

A saddle that fits you is going to be the most comfortable so think about seat depth and stirrup bar placement etc.

Yes I understand that …I’m looking for something specific for people with back problems such as myself

I haven’t tried the Biomex but do notice an improvement when riding in a carbon fiber tree saddle vs beechwood tree saddle. Alas the Mademoiselle I have on trial doesn’t fit pony so the search continues. I’m hoping to try the Prestige CPS tree next.

Not a saddle but I did find improvement in my back pain after buying and riding in my Invictus half pad (and to a lesser degree my FreeJump stirrups). Thinline was terrible for me and most other pads were in the “no noticeable difference” category for my back.

I’ll echo Scribbler a bit - I have noticed if the saddle is not balanced on the horse OR if it puts my leg infront of me I will end up with pain after that ride 100% of the time (as I subconsciously tilt forward to “catch up” to my leg which is what ends up straining my back).

On more note about back pain unrelated to saddles - I very recently figured out sugar is a huge trigger for my pain. If I have too much (and “too much” is not very much, apparently my body’s tolerance is low) I will be in pain the next day even if I didn’t do anything straining. I’m sure everyone is different but it’s something I wish I had known years ago so figured I’d toss it out there! I wish you the best in managing your pain, back pain is such a B!tch!

I know that this is not the type of saddle you require, but I thought I’d share the following.

My husband had a similar back surgery, and when he needed a new dressage saddle several years ago for his then young horse, the fitter let us have a Stubben Biomex on loan for a couple of weeks. He got to ride in it a lot, including on a trail ride that lasted a few hours.

He decided that he preferred the saddle without the Biomex, as he felt the extra cushioning isolated him a little too much – he likes a close contact feel. He ended up getting one without Biomex and has been happy with it.

I thought he’d love the Biomex. Any possibility that you can trial a demo saddle?

That’s interesting about the sugar …I will look into the Invictus pad …I normally just use a Mattes half pad without any shims …I also have an old Thinline contour half pad might be worth a try as well

Interesting…ok…yes ideally it would be nice to demo one first before paying to get one in on trial
