Stupid farm question # 314: Jelly jar lights

We’ve got 4 jelly jar lights in the barn, and two bulbs have burned out in the last couple days. Time to replace the whole set.

But DAMNED if we can get the jars unscrewed! We got one done…and it wasn’t hard. Unscrewed, popped in new bulb, jar went back on. Easy peasy. But the others aren’t budging.

Is there some trick to this? It really doesn’t seem like it should be this hard.

First thing I would try is spray some WD-40 around the base.

No concerns with that screwing with the light fixture? Definitely thought about it, but was a bit unsure since the fixture itself looks to be plastic.

After mucho googling, this is the fixture we’re dealing with here:

Success! Partially. Was able to unscrew the jars from two fixtures with bulbs that still light after having them on for some time. I think the heat helped.

Might have the drag out the hair dryer for the one that’s still stuck. Lightbulb in there is dead.

was going to suggest hairdryer too. A strap wrench may be useful.

When you screw it back on might be a good idea to use some kind of grease, like the kind you get at the auto parts store for light bulbs in cars maybe.

did you put too high of wattage bulbs in the units? The poly lens are only rated to a 60watt whereas the glass lens are 100watt

Nope. The fixture and the globes are rates to 150 watts.

I suspect this is a temperature issue. I think it just sort of locked together when it got cold.

We’re putting in LEDs that are suitable for enclosed fixtures, so we’ll see how that all works out. It’s really a hassle to change out the bulbs and I’d like to do it as little as possible :stuck_out_tongue:
