Recommendations for sturdiest slow feeder hay nets? Need one that is very slow feed but also sturdy so the fat horse doesn’t just bite holes in it and make it a fast feed net lol.
What are you using now that he’s chewing through?
I find it tough to beat Shire’s from a price perspective, and overall find their nets durable. They have the greedy feeder net for small holes:
Or this is my go-to for “regular” (2"?) holes:
I do wish the large Greedy Feeder was bigger. I can fit an entire small bale into the other large net, but only about 2/3rds of one in the GF. But when I look around and see that other nets with that size hole are near or over a hundred bucks for a bale sized net, I just make due!
I too love the Greedy Feeder net!
Hay chix nets really hold up.
I’ve had excellent durability with Nibble Net haynets. I have two in the trailer and three in the run in shed.
I have heard good things about HayChix and bought one, but find the Nibble Nets easier to fill so I can’t speak to their durability.
The premium line (holes on both sides) is their most durable. https://www.thinaircanvas.com/
Any slow feeder net inside of a Hay Play bag
I saw this company at KY3DE. Their nets are made of marine grade netting. They seriously LOOKED like they would last, but I’ve not bought one yet. They are pricier. But if they last, it may be worth it.
I LOVE my Hay Burners and they are soft and knotless as well as sturdy. Soft and knotless matter because the cost of hay nets is pennies on the dollar compared to dental care and vet bills.
I feed 24/7 in my nets and have yet to see any tearing whatsoever.
NibbleNets wear like iron and mine are almost 10 years old - if I scrubbed the vinyl sides, they’d look new.
The ‘old’ HayChix nets are great, but the newer ones seem to be just a little lower quality - I’d say the ones in the last 2-3 years.
I have been very very happy with my HayBurners and NAGbags, but I haven’t had them more than a year.
Yes, I have a hay net problem, I fully admit that
Nibble Nets!!!
We have the Shires nets, 2" holes to slow down nibbling at horse places we go to. I have found my smart horses get quite ANGRY at the Nets if they are not anchored firmly at both ends. That time with only one anchor point is when nets get ripped and torn.
With both ends of nets tethered, horse can push into the net, get some hay wisps to pull out and chew. Even small wisps seem to prevent trashing the nets. So all our nets have a snap at both ends to tie them down when in use.
Big horses, big lips, so the 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch holes are just too small to use for them. Hay net should not just tease them with unavailable food! We mostly use the small hole nets for travel times. They will last most of the day going, standing at the trailer, heading home, one net per horse, not even a full bale in it. Horse does not NEED to eat/waste a bale worth from a net while standing around during his day away. He doesn’t eat that much at home! Bigger than 2 inch holes size nets let him pull hay out, drop it to be wasted, yet “you want hIm having something if he should get hungry.” So the 2 inch hole nets work well for us.
I put them in a cloth laundry bag, to contain the rope closure, run them thru the washing machine to clean them. They look nice again, all bright colors showing.
