Do we now have to subscribe to someone in order to send a personal message? What is the deal with subscribing to someone?

No, you can send a pm to anyone.
Subscribing to a user allows you to see profile info, like recent posts, if they have set their profile to “subscriber only.” Most have not.
What Simkie said. Are you having trouble PMing someone?
I have got that message last week of must subscribe also, but just as normal I just ignored it and still was able to send the PM which was received without a problem
There is an individual user setting for PMs:
“Only from subscribers, moderators, and administrators”
So maybe you’re trying to pm a user that’s selected that option.
It’s not board-wide, though.
