Substitute for Gut X

I’ve had my mare on Gut X since May '23 as a preventative. I’ve never scoped her for ulcers, but noting her anxiety when trailering alone and knowing we would be headed to a few lessons and show venues by ourselves, I thought it would be good to be on top of it. I live in Maine, and with the onset of single digits, she is declaring loud and clear that she does not want to eat her meal with that in it. And her feed pan (She lives out.) has a lovely frozen layer of expensive supplement. (And yes, we have kept the GutX in a lightly heated cooler to keep it from freezing, but she still says no.)

I’ve decided it will be better for my pocketbook to skip wasting it now, even if I have to do the loading dose again once the weather warms up. All that backstory to ask: What pelleted or powdered supplement would be a good substitute for Gut X during the deep freeze months?

I have had good luck with Equine Elixirs Ulcereraser.

I’ve never heard of that one. I’ll look it up, thank you.

I’ve read on this board that oat bran can be helpful (like 1/2 a cup). I also give my horse a handful of Tums before riding (she thinks they’re a lovely treat).

Thank you for the oat bran suggestion. I tried tums. She ate them the first time and then refused them after that. :frowning: Picky mare.

Oat bran has beta glucan which is the useful part, and it’s for hind gut issues rather than gastric. Even then, if you’re just buying “oat bran” from a store, it’s probably not the high bg content bran that is used in supplements.

And not the easiest for my BO to deal with either. Pellets would be best, followed by powder.

Thanks for that info, Amberley.

Uckele GUT pellets ,

Equine Elixirs Ulceraser(they’re like seeds -never met a horse who doesn’t like them)

Purina Outlast

Succeed Oral Paste Syringes

Thank you for offering several ideas! Is Smart Pak still offering Uckele GUT pellets? I love Uckele products and was very disappointed when they were bought out.

If you need pellet, I’d try Outlast first. If you can stick with liquid, and want to keep the same active ingredient but with a different flavor (still liquid), try Alimend or Relyne-GI.

Thank you for the recommendation. I think I have to switch from a liquid to pellet or powder until warmer weather. Even though we were keeping the viscous liquid relatively warm, she is not a fan of it in the cold.

Have a look at Vitalize Digest More Plus - Vitalize is the same company that manufactures and delivers Alimend. I’ve had really good luck with it.

Thank you, I will take a look at it.
