Substitutions for Equioxx?

Looooooong time lurker here who needs suggestions. My daughters TB mare is on daily Equioxx tablets for stiffness/arthritis. We are finding that it is extremely hard to find this medication to refill although my daughter has been able to order through our vet vs the supplier-though I’m wondering how long that will last. Are there others here who are in the same situation and what you are finding that works as well?-(yes, I will consult with the vet also but would like some ideas to offer as well) Thank you!

There’s always joint supplements. I personally use Smartpak brand since they come in pellet form and my mares a very picky eater. I feel they work well. My vet had suggested once a day Equioxx but I tried a supplement first and only use Equioxx when traveling, shoeing, or after a hard lesson. If once a day Equioxx is the best option then I’d suggest going online. I’ve ordered from PetMeds a few times. Just fill in your vet info and they’ll contact the vet for the prescription. If I remember right they can refill for a year depending on what it is. There are other similar sites you can try.

I was talking to my vet about it the other week. There is currently a shortage in it. If I am remember correctly, they did not anticipate the demand with the new product with one of the ingredients. Hopefully be resolved shortly.

Previcox looks to be available in places where Equioxx is sold out. Same drug. Licensed for dogs. It’s what we used before they came out with a tablet form of firocoxib for equines.

Given the shortage, your vet might be willing to write a script for Previcox instead of Equioxx.

Many places will not fill scripts for Previcox now unless your vet is primarily a small animal vet.

And my vet practice was told by Merial to write horses prescriptions for Preicox, until the problem is settled.

That’s good to know! We were told the opposite by distributors.

What I heard was that Equioxx is currently unavailable due to its being manufactured in Puerto Rico where there remain major power issues which are preventing many companies from being able to produce goods. Because of this, for the time being equine vets ARE being allowed to write prescriptions for Previcox.

Agree with those suggesting Previcox. I get the 227mg pills for my guy and he gets 1/4 of a pill a day. Previcox ends up being way cheaper than the equioxx tablets as well, which is why I chose to get it instead. My vet has no problem giving me the Previcox prescription.

I’m in Canada where we don’t have Equioxx but do have Previcox. We are not having issues getting Previcox!

My Previcox that was prescribed as a sub for Equioxx is 57mg, the same dose as the horse version. Same price too.

They are the same drug, same molecular composition. Different name.

I was hoping to get the larger dog dose and use 1/4 and save money.

When my vet gave me Previcox I thought it was a mistake. Same drug.

My gelding was on Previcox a couple of times for soft-tissue problems. I cut back to every other day and it seemed to maintain its effectiveness.

I appreciate all the responses and have contacted our vet in regard to Previcox. Thank you!!
