SUCCEED

Has anyone here uses the SUCCEED supplement for digestive problems with their horses? My vet feels my horse has developed hind gut ulcers. He was treated with omeprazole, lglutamine and aloe Vera for 30 days and another 14 days of straight omeprazole. In that time time frame he has colicked twice. This is a horse that hasn’t ever colicked in the 4 years I’ve had him. I have him on equishure and that has improved his appetite but that’s it. There was no changes with the omeprazole. Would it be worth it to try SUCCEED?

Was your horse scoped for ulcers originally? If so did you use Gastroguard to treat? There has been some posts (and on one of mine) where posters have shown that the generic brands do not have the stated doses of the Omprezole as stated plus as per my vet, the way the generic is buffered doesn’t guarantee that it will get to the ulcer!! Yes gastroguard and ulcerguard are very expensive but they do seem to work the best and personally after a lot of research and from the great help I’ve received here, I’m sticking with those!

But, if it is hind gut ulcers I’ve heard good things about Succeed!

My vet is ordering me a small tub of the Succeed supplement for my mare who is currently on Omeprazole. I think it is a pro/prebiotic? I have her currently on a different brand of probiotic (it is in a tube) but I want something I can just add to her feed, and my vet thought this was worth a try. Her feeling is that the horse should be treated with the Omeprazole, and then maintained with the pre/probiotic.

The primary ingredient is Beta Glucan which you can get in Oat Flour. Honeyville sells 50# bags for about $50. Shipping is $4.

Oh… and dump the blasted Omneprazol. It won’t help or touch hind gut ulcers. It only works in the stomach proper.

Yes, I have used it with success.

Succeed-challenge.com is the website for the Succeed Challenge, which is a 60day trial and you get your money back if you aren’t satisfied.

I am in the middle of the challenge right now and am happy with my horse’s attitude. My worrier of a mare seems happy and more content on the Succeed and has been pleasant under saddle. She also is happier in work and has been back in more consistent work lately, so it’s hard to know what exactly is making the difference for her. Plus, she has mentally matured a lot in the past year…lots of possibilities for the positive change. Regardless, I figured it was worth a try after my vet suggested it. She tries to steal the tube from me when I give her the Succeed everyday, so I know she likes the taste and doesn’t think it’s torture

Also, here is an article from Succeed’s website about feeding generic Oat Flour and how it doesn’t give you the same benefits. I have no idea what to believe, but it’s something I came across.

ETA that I started the Succeed in the last few days of tapering off Omeprazole. Same as you, I didn’t notice a big difference during ulcer treatment. My horse was not scoped prior to treating, but now that I know it isn’t all that expensive I wouldn’t treat again without scoping first

Thanks everyone. I think I might pick some up this week. Does anyone know if you can give it with equishure and a pro and pre biotic?

Yes, always use the probiotics, every day for life!

I’ve battled hind gut ulcers with my 7 year old OTTB for several years.

Taking him off long stem fiber is the biggest thing that seems to help. I also keep him on good prebiotic and probiotics.

I’ve not yet tried Succeed. My vet, who is very savvy about GI issues, said it just seems to work with some horses, and he thinks it’s worth trying for sure.

I second the Oat Flour and I buy it in 50# bags. I do not buy Succeed’s argument that it is not effective. Maybe I am a bit (or a lot) jaded about marketing, but the fact that they actually bring up oat flour makes me suspect that it is a good alternative.

The other ingredients are also available in bulk through human supplement websites. I have made my own version of Succeed in the past and will look for the recipe if anyone wants it. However, looking at the research on the ingredients, I am convinced that the oat flour is the primary ingredient.

Succeed is probably very cheap to manufacture - and the cost is quite high. Their marketing and promotion tactics are excellent. The research behind their product is very poor, lacking. I am not convinced at all that it is a useful product and I have added it to the ever growing list of supplements that make us feel good when we dump them in the feed tub, and may actually be effective primarily as a placebo. If it does work, I am still convinced that one can make a home version for pennies…

Succeed works wonders…

Copied and pasted from a diff. thread (my own post). Background was that he had been treated for a fungal eye infection and had to be tranquilized a lot to get it healed - was off feed/work/on stall rest and developed once a week mild colic symptoms.

I treated with UG and it still was happening. I had some Succeed (tubes) that I hadn’t ever used so I thought what the heck, we’ll try that (vet concurred it wouldn’t hurt).

Within a week, my horse was eating with gusto, losing his cow patty manure, just overall, SO MUCH BETTER.

I wouldn’t have believed it had I not seen him transform with my own eyes. I tapered off the UG and left him on Succeed, just went to the powdered stuff. That Succeed really turned him around (the fecal blood test was positive for fore/hindgut ulcers prior to starting the Succeed - not saying it’s 100% diagnostic).
