sucralfate

I’ve done a search on the forums and there doesn’t seem to be a ton of information about sucralfate.

For those who have used it and saw a difference–how long did you treat? I’ve seen advice ranging from 10 days to 30.

Were you able to treat on an empty stomach? Did anyone not treat on a truly empty stomach and see results?

You might turn more up via search if you spell it correctly

It’s sucralfate

woof! some monday!

Editing post-- thank you!

I’ve used it twice and I gave it with feed. I noticed a big difference both times for my aged gelding. Last year he was leaving his hay and then started leaving his feed and acting uncomfortable. Also had what I like to call “juicy farts” where he has a lot of liquid that runs down the back of his legs but doesn’t really have diarrhea. More like cow patty poops. This year he started the same… leaving his hay, juicy farts and cow patties, and then he started dropping weight like a rock. I put him on it again and he went back to eating hay, no more juice and had normal poops. We’ve done the 30 day dosage both times.

I’ve used the human version, Carafate, for myself but not on a horse. It coats the stomach lining and helps to protect it. I had to take it 30-60 min before eating. I didn’t know this med was available for horses, but I guess why not? It’s safe and it may help some who are not helped by PPIs.

What are you treating? I used it to treat my gelding for ulcers. He had really bad ones, so he was on it for 6-7 months, twice a day. Now we give him sucralfate when he’s at the shows over his grain.

Sucralfate should be given on an empty stomach for best results. Thirty minutes before feeding. It coats the stomach so if there are ulcers or inflammation, the sucralfate can prevent stomach upset after a grain feeding. It’s often given when horses go off their grain, and often related to ulcers.

My horse lives on sucralfate. Its truly the only way he’s happy… I do not feed it on an empty stomach as that protocol is not manageable for my board situation. He just gets it in his meals. It is a lifesaver for us…

This is good to hear.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I know ideally it’s fed on an empty stomach 2x a day, but that is hard to make those on an empty stomach. I can do one feeding on a mostly empty stomach, but the other one will have to be done with food. So, was curious to hear if it was still effective this way. It sounds like even if it doesn’t have full effect, it can still have some benefit, so that’s good enough for me!
