Sudden tumor on dog's paw

Curious if anyone has any experience with either a histiocytoma versus mast cell tumors?

And yes, we’ve been to the vet and waiting on the aspiration biopsy.

About a week ago, a small round sphere shaped tumor appeared on the paw of my 5yo JRT. Now she has a history of allergies and paw licking and I had just gotten her cytopoint shot maybe 2 weeks before. At first I thought it was a hot spot, but realized it was much larger and not flat. So, off to the vet we went. They said based on the look, it could be either histiocytoma or mast cell. They sent of a needle aspiration biopsy and put her on a few days of steroids.

Hoping with her immune/allergy issues it is the histiocytoma…but curious if others have dealt with either of these?

I had a similar situation with a beagle. Twice he had tumours appear on his paw suddenly. We had them removed both times and they turned out to be histiocytomas. They never came back, although as he aged, he developed lumps and tags all over. I hope it turns out well for your pup!

Histiocytomas will regress on their own. Typically get nasty looking then go away.

Mast cells can be a gnarly tumor depending on grading. There is a new injection treatment for them if they are in an area not amenable to removal and fit certain criteria. https://vet-us.virbac.com/stelfonta

Good news…it came back as a histiocytoma. It’s definitely looking nastier…but at least it will just look ugly and disappear. Very glad it wasn’t mast cell…as it’s in a tough location to remove on her paw.
