Suffolk Downs

[QUOTE=horselover101;3333998]
in that quote tex i’m not callin u ignorant. defending him is ignorant the action of defending him is ignorant. so u thinkin i’m attacking ur character is sort of skewed. so get ur facts straight first before u tell me what i’m saying is skewed.[/QUOTE]

I am ribbing you because I’m not sure if you realize how you’re coming across in written form.

We both feel our facts are straight, so I think we’re just going to have to agree to disagree. But for those unfamiliar with the situation, I think it’s only fair that someone should offer an opposing view from the other side of the fence.

i’ve decided too that we do disagree its a losing argument for both sides. a question for everyone. who actually works on the track and what occupation.

Apparently this Gill person won’t have to worry about Suffolk’s new rules. He doesn’t need kill buyers. And I’ll bet not a damn thing will be done in the way of an investigation by the track. I’d love to be wrong.

The ho hum, so-what-else-is-new attitude :sleepy: toward this gore-fest by folks in the biz speaks volumes but is not at all surprising.

Perhaps someone not in the biz but possessing a strong stomach needs to take a video camera to Suffolk Downs. Sounds as though there’d be some great footage available on a daily basis for the PETA and HSUS folk. Or maybe another HBO special. Yeah, the non-racing fan public would love to see this stuff.

horselover-when you come over to a forum and with only a handful of posts and start making accusations about somebody and calling people ignorant, you’re not going to get a lot of people to listen to you. I’m not saying one way or another if what you say is true or not, but it isn’t productive to attack. Calling people ignorant doesn’t make what you say true. Give me proof that these horses are not taken care of back at the barn and I’ll listen. Have you spoken to the track to express your concerns?

It seems a lot of people are using this forum to btch and complain ONLY lately. It’s getting really old.

bitch and complain…no thats what other people do. What I’m trying to do is to get people to realize what really goes on at suffolk downs and to have them look at the numbers of this owner and trainer. come down to the backside and watch them in the morning, [edit]. Watch the race replays of yesterday of the two horses breakdown. a jockey got hurt because of his practices. [edit]. Horses and jocks are getting hurt because of him. Horses are dying because of him. Four died in a matter of 5 days. Something needs to be done. People need to email suffolk to help put a stop to him.
I mean people were all upset over peta and the triple crown, but this is something that people need to be MORE upset over. [edit].

Let me just say for starters that I am really pissed off about being put in a position where I have to say anything positive about Mike Gill. If you are going to bitch about something at least get your facts straight horselover, especially if you are going to couple your misinformation with throwing around the word ignorant.
Mike Gill is not a licensed trainer at Suffolk Downs. If he claimed every single horse on the backside, he still couldn’t be leading trainer because he isn’t a trainer. Secondly, he has the vet perform myectomies on the horses. A myectomy cuts the muscle that attaches to the tendon that attaches to the flap. It does not remove the flap, it does not even touch the flap.
That said, I think the guy is an ass but for the correct reasons not some made up crap like Horselover posted.

AMEN!! ( but then what do i know, i’m just the ‘resident jack-ass’ hehe)

hey lauri who do u think calls all the shots over at mike gill’s barn? i don’t think his trainer does. he is trying to get his trainer to be leadin trainer and himself leadin owner. and how effective is that operation. he does it to every single one of his horses that he claims.

I don’t care who calls the shots. You came in here calling US names while spouting misinformation. Come back if and when you have a clue what you are talking about.

I know. That is the worst crime of all when someone comes on with some of the facts, a lot of innuendo and incredibly poor communication skills, leaving reasonably rational intelligent well spoken people to defend the truth, and by default, an asshole. That totally sucks.

Horselover, as for your original premise, what say Suffolk goes back to the way it was - having Mike Gill AND turning a blind eye to the kill buyers? That’d still be worse than just Mike Gill, mmkay?

miss critic i never called ne1 ignorant. i said that their arguments were ignorant. i never attacked ne1 or their character.

laurie also if i accidentally mistook for callin gill a trainer i apologize. i’ve been pretty right besides that silly little mistake and what the whole operation is about. besides that i’m pretty right on about him and u kno it.

hey donkey kong DK why not solve all the problems. solving the killers was good but thats just half the problem. gill is making a bad name for the industry and suffolk downs.

hey dmk the donkey kong thing was a compliment i used to love the video game.

“Pretty right” hmm?

No one is arguing that he isn’t a jerk and hasn’t had plenty of controversy surrounding him in past and present. But you are spewing a lot of other innuendo and accusations that just are either grossly exaggerated or just plain untrue.

A lot of people hate the operation and with plenty of reason. You’re completely entitled to your opinion. However, I’m glad you’re now realizing you’re only “pretty right” (another way of saying “mostly wrong?”) with your egregious blanket statements.

I agree 100%!

So… what else is going on at Suffolk lately?

I have no dog in this fight, nor am I implying ANYTHING either positive or negative about Gill. That being said, I thought that what he was doing was claiming horses and then leasing them out to trainers? Or has he settled in with one person now? I haven’t paid much attention to him in recent months, but I can remember before seeing horses in every single race on the card, all owned by him but from 8 different barns…

And comments like this is what drives that “us versus them” attitude people complain about on this board. If you want to have a sensible discussion, I’m all for it. But, inflammatory comments like that are not going to go over well.

What is your point? Do you want to see racing shut down? That’s what it sounds like. If you really want to talk about horse welfare there are better ways to go about it.

People who try to change the world all at once are generally doomed to disappointment, and worse yet, NOTHING changes. You can tilt at windmills all your life, railing at people who might confront you with the world as it is, not as you frame it, or you can learn to make change happen in rational increments. Guess which approach does more over the long run?

Best as I can tell all you have accomplished here is to get a a lot of people who otherwise genuinely dislike Mike Gill and his ilk, correcting the record where he is concerned, due to your misstatements. Right now you are actually helping his case in a bizarre way because you are so out there with half truths and partial distortions. Such is the way of extremists, they only think they help their cause.

And of course childishly slipping in an insult and then coyly saying “no really, I like the game so it is not an insult” is a tossup for pathetic. Pathetic in that you bothered with it at all or pathetic in it’s actual execution. And yet, I grant you, still mildly amusing in its 3rd grade mentality.

I have it on good authority that Suffolk IS making a good sized donation to the TRF, and there will be contributions made to CANTER here in short order.

So YAY for Suffolk putting some money where their mouth is!!

So… what else is going on at Suffolk lately?

  1. The My Fair Lady Stakes! 1 & 1/16 on the turf (um…if this rain ever stops) for fillies & mares. $50,000 on the line (Hey, don’t laugh. That’s a good chunk o’ change around here.) Multiple New England champ British Event is returning, hoping for a repeat performance.

  2. Also on tomorrow’s card: for people like me who are fans of iron horses, Osvaldo Rivera-trained 9 year old Pottersville is in the first, 10 year old Sing Me Back Home is running in the 4th for owner/trainer Ralph Whitney, and 11 year old Serra Retreat goes in the 5th for the team of Anne and Matthew Clarke. Hats off to the old boys.

  3. The return of jockey Tammi Piermarini! Well, sort of…she’ll be the special guest for tomorrow’s Fan Photo Experience, which gives race fans the opportunity to get their picture taken with a racehorse (methinks a retired one ;)) and a jockey. (Tammi is temporarily out of the irons while she recovers from injuries sustained when she was unseated from mount Caught Stealing in a race on June 18th.)

  4. Myachi! Okay, not my thing, but it gives the kids something to do.

FYI, for the past few years, Suffolk was nearly Gill-free. He’s back this year in a big way, teamed with trainer James Taglianetti, claiming horses left and right. Cutthroat. Another good argument against claiming races.

Yes, there are still people at Suffolk who make me want to rip my hair out. But there are also lots of people at Suffolk who care about the welfare of the horses, from new track owner Richard Fields to the horsemen themselves. Change takes time. And money. And actions which speak louder than words.

We all know this zero-tolerance of slaughter policy will be hard to enforce, but they are serious about taking stalls away.

This just in from the land of sunshine and butterflies: negative people suck!

Barnfairy, we need more of that (things going on) on here
