Suggestions for a saddle for DH! He's 6'4"!

Hello all, I am hoping to get some suggestions for saddles to try for Mr. BCGirl.

He is 6’4" and basically all legs. From the point of his hip to his knee measures 21". I found him a nice used 18" Smith-Worthington with a very very forward flap and pretty thick knee roll which he absolutely despises. He tried out my 17.5 Crosby Equilibrium today and vastly preferred it to the Smith-Worthington minus it being far too small for him. I have done a little looking around online and don’t even know if they make Crosbys in a 19 or so.

Long term I am looking for something that he will hunt in, but short term he is really just getting back into riding.

I personally am a life long Crosby/pancake saddle person as anything else kills my hips due to all the padding. As a result I don’t know all that much about other saddles as I have always had one that fits me and thankfully my horses!

So the point is, I need some ideas! All of the trial saddles from Smartpak, Dover, etc are all 17. I guess I could try some of those and see what works, but am at a loss at to where to begin!

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I don’t know enough about what you’re looking for to make any suggestions, but I did find this just now (19" Crosby AP):

http://www.pelham-saddlery.com/allpurpose18/Used14350.html

I found it by Googling 19" Crosby saddle and got several other hits as well, including ebay. Don’t know if you’re looking for something new or not, but hope some of these help.

Having a 6’4"+ friend, I can identify with you and BCGuy!

I have a very forward cut Barnsby that would be great for him. 17.5 seat but made for someone who is all legs.

What does WFP ride?

Used is definitely better… breaking in a saddle is a pain and when getting back into riding , one less thing to be concerned with is nice.

My riding buddy is that tall and all legs. He likes Stubbens.

Stubben posted on their FB page a couple of weeks ago that they are selling extra saddles they made for the RCMP (based on the Siegfried) – they are new - 18.5" (selling for $1500 if I remember right).

I can’t access FB right now but will link the post as soon as I get home tomorrow.

Here it is.

Thanks Equibrit.I wonder what WFP rode “back in the day” before he was sponsored?

A Stubben? The were very popular!

Albion have supported him since 1987.

But before then? Or do you suppose he’s always used them and that is why they sponsor?
Such a tall guy and not all legs. I do love to watch him ride!

He was 18 in 1987 and had been eventing for 3 years, I’d be surprised if he had a sponsor before that (other than his Mum !)

What matters most is how much of his 6’ 4" is LEG. Specifically, what is the length from his hip-bone to knee, and from his knee to his heel? Those are the measurements that will determine the seat size he takes more than his height overall. Best to go to a tack shop that serves foxhunters and eventers (lots of adults!) and will have a greater diversity of saddle sizes. Sit in everything and get a feel for where his knee hits the kneeroll, and how long a flap he needs.

My own pick for a really tall guy would be a Stubben 18’ + (there are tons of them on E-Bay) like the Parsifal or Imperator with a really forward flap that will enable him to ride short but give his knee somewhere to go. But you really won’t know till he sits in some stuff. The great thing about Stubbens is also that the tree sizes are standardized; one problem with older Crosbys and such is that our modern horses tend to be much wider. I’ve got a fabulous 19" Pariani that I picked up mint at a tag sale, but it’s a narrow TB tree and I can only use it on that kind of back. Stubbens go from 29.0 to 32.0 cm. and fit QH’s, WB’s, and even most drafts.

Was it the padding that he disliked in the Smith Worthington, or something else about the saddle? Smith Worthington does have some more Spartan saddles on their web site, such as the Beaufort & Avalon, without all the padding, and there’s a Stellar Orbit which does have a fairly small knee roll and a removable thigh block, and those are all in the Bargain Basement section.

Stubben has some gently used saddles on their web site now, including a Stubben Siegfried VSSG, which is their very forward flap version, in a 19":

If you can find a Stubben Siegfried CS, that has a much more forward flap than a regular Siegfried.

Can’t make much in the way of meaningful recommendations without seeing the horse you’re trying to fit (or at least seeing photos and templates). However, most of the UK saddle companies will make a longer and/or more forward flap to accommodate the taller riders, and many can do a 19" seat (though in some cases, it will add a week or so to delivery times, since the tree may have to be made specially). Some companies charge more for this option, and some (Loxley, Frank Baines and Black Country come to mind) offer it at no extra cost.

I am no where near as tall as your hubby, but I do have a VERY long thigh (19 inches hip to knee). I ride in a collegiate Nobility - 18.5" seat - forward flaps. It is a copy of an Albion K2 CC (show jumper).

Unlike other collegiates, this one is flocked (comes with a point billet tab) and is made in a differnt factory than the rest of the line.

(by the way, I ordered an 18.5 from this company - and asked if it would be truly non returnable if it did not fit my horse. They assured me, in writing, that I COULD return that size for a fit issue - as these are close outs of stock on hand).
(review:

I am 5’8" with a 23" length from back of seat to end of knee. This is one of the few saddles long enough to accommodate my long leg without having to think about going up a seat size or ordering a plus one flap. This saddle is comfortable. Although the knee and thigh blocks seem large they are comfortable and did not feel restricting. Overall a nice quality saddle. The wide is very wide about a 6" gullet with a wide channel. Great for my draft cross.)

I have a medium tree - which fits my horse that often takes a medium wide quiet well.

This my saddle

As I understand, he rides in an Albion “Kontact” which is a more aggressive, closer contact version of a K2 jumping saddle.

I am 6’3" and my husband is 6’4" I have a long thigh, and (relatively) short calf. We both ride in 18" Berney Dublin Jumpers for the jumping phases of eventing and for foxhunting.

Middleburg Tack Exchange has a number of size 18" including a County Conquest with forward flaps. Their is a Thornhill that is a 19". This is their AP listing.

A few 18.5 and 19" on the close contact. The Cynron in black seems to have a forward flap. I know nothing about that brand.

Hey BCGirl, I was trolling eBay today and remembered your post about your long-legged DH. A Bruce Davidson Crosby is always a nice saddle, and this is too big for me but might work for your DH…nice forward flaps:

I have a Northrun Doswell, that could fit a very long legged rider. The panels are a forward cut, abs they’re seats run almost a half inch larger than listed ( my 17.5 measures much closer to 18). They’re not super fancy, but it is comfortable and the level of quality I would expect from their price ( not super cheap, but not like a county either).

Appsalute

Love the saddle and the horse! (I had a leopard appy that I showed under the name Appsalute)

So is that a normal flap? Not a short flap?
