What color accessories would look nice on a dark bay mare who’s only chrome is 2 short hind socks? Not into pink or neon colors please I’ve only had geldings in the past, so marine blue looks a bit masculine…
When I was ordering my eventing vest, I held every possible color swatch up to my dark bay gelding. I ended up with a combo of navy/burgundy. Periwinkle looked fantastic for some reason and red also looked very nice.
Personally I like darker tones on dark bays - forest green, navy, burgundy. My unofficial color for my dark bay is navy, though most of my stuff is in my favorite color, “whatever’s on sale.”
Thanks! I’ve only had geldings until now and it seems more of the classic colors look masculine. Trying to pick a feminine color pad and boots for the mare without going all “girlie pink”. Was thinking of burgundy, but wondered what other riders with dark mares have liked…
Red!
Burgundy and silver were my colors on my old dark bay. Looked fab on the blood bay I had later too.
Current mount is black/grey/yellow. Dark bay.
I like one dark color and a light accent. Tan and black look good. Maroon and navy. Black and yellow.
I also like hunter green.
OK, I think I’m leaning towards burgundy with gray or silver trim. Greens and blues say “male” to me. I also want a color that is pretty easy to find, so rose, peach/orange, or pastels are pretty much out. Thanks to all the suggestions so far and if there are any others out there, I am still open! Thanks!!
I love burgundy on dark bay, and I love the idea of a silver lining!!!
Turquoise and grey? Lavender and grey? Black and gold? Red and black or grey?
My dark bay mare’s color is royal blue. I am idly looking for a second color for my filly, who is also a dark bay. She’s more of a black/fade to brown in the summer type of dark bay. I never thought of royal blue as a “masculine” color - it is my favorite color.
I use very dark purple and charcoal gray. Just got my new Ogilvy pad and it is stunning!
Ooohhh…any photos of that Ogilvy pad? Those colors sound nice too. Guess I’m trying to choose a classy color that says “feminine” besides pink!
My dark bay mare rides in a dark brown brown pad with red and gold piping. It’s gorgeous on her.
As someone who is still using the same colors I picked out over 35 years ago to go with a chestnut horse and who hasn’t owned a chestnut horse since, I would recommend picking colors you love and not worrying about the color of the horse you happen to own today. Gear is expensive and quite frankly can be used for many years longer than you will ride any one particular horse.
Off topic, but subk, what is your secret to not owning chestnuts? I have the opposite problem, I can’t seem to buy a bay no matter how hard I try!
I like red and black for dark bays. But bright, cherry red. Try on a brandy new red halter and see what I mean. Its hard to find bright red blankets though. I think you can, just not real easy. I still like the colors, though. Red blanket and saddle pads with black trim. Yum.
As a jump judge, I say try to find a color that stands out a little from all the others who are in black, green and blue! Dark bay is awfully common (especially when wearing sunglasses!) and pinneys hide what the rider’s vest color is a lot of the time. If you have something a little different on the horse - I vote for burgundy and silver, or burgundy/silver/white - at least I can write that down in the “comments” section to distinguish you from the last five dark bays that went past!

Not sure. After hearing that mr. subk often could not tell my plain dark bay 16 hand OTTB from my plain dark bay 17 hand WB a friend suggested if I would only get plain dark bay horses and frequently move them around from pasture to pasture I could own several more horses and my husband would never know!

Agree. Pick something that isn’t garish or apt to clash, and go with it. By the time I hung up my irons I was pretty much down to black and white with the faintest hints of hunter green.
