Suggestions for Muscle recovery feed, supplements, and more...

I’ve had my first experience with Mesotherapy and it has gone amazingly well. My horses topline has filled in, his gait has been improving ten fold and he’s no longer sore through his back.

Currently we have him on the Purina Amino Acid feed supplement but there is a chance that I will no longer have access to that and looking at options for substitutes. I will be honest that I am not 100% sure this stuff works, BUT he has been on it while doing his rehab and I cant say that it hasn’t…don’t fix whats not broke, right?

So I know many people don’t believe in supplements, etc, but I do and I have seen many work and many not. I know its really about chemistry and such…anyways…

Does anyone have an suggestions for a feed based or supplement that you have used to help with muscle recovery?

Muscle recovery? I am not 100% sure if there are many good supplements for that exactly. What your horse probably needs is something to help build correct muscle - not recover. You obviously want to start with a complete diet. Find out what is lacking and you should be able to address the problem. I’ve had good luck with alfalfa + fat source on top of a thorough workout regime for building topline. Some people local supplement lysine, which should already be in most muscle building supplements.

You could try Tri-Amino or Fat-Cat, though of the two I prefer TA. Personally, I’d be doing vit E + rice bran oil (or vegetable) with an MSM/Glucosamine supplement for a horse coming back from mesotherapy. That combined with estrone or robaxin if vet feels it is needed, and lots and lots of hill work & poles. But as always your vet would know best for your specific situation.

He’s on Robaxin and honestly I am up for him to just be on that long term as its more cost effective as other stuff. But the current feed supplement he is on has ingredients that help muscles recover after work fast that in turn prevents soreness.

The Purina Amino Acid is a mix of proteins for muscle building (though I have not seen it be successful for that aspect and this is used on 4 horses with no topline change…), provides extra energy (still on the fence on that one…) and proteins and other things for muscle recovery after a tough workout.

I like the Tri Amino more than the Purina Amino Acid. It seems they mostly add protein to that supplement. For Protein to synthesize properly, we need those amino acids. Tri Amino looks to have more of the 3 aminos than that of the Purina product, which looks to be mostly protein before anything else. What type of food is he on? I would recommend feeding something higher in protein and supplementing with Tri Amino instead of this Purina supplement…more amino acids for your buck. You may not even need to go up in protein depending on what you feed and how much it has in it…JMO

Tri Amino or Nutramino. Possibly adding lysine alone.

Also, MSM: http://www.thehorse.com/articles/10913/msm-helps-sore-muscles

That said, I’ve had only minimal results with the above and Robaxin, but I’ve discovered it’s really all from my horse’s neck troubles. YMMV.

Thanks all, his current diet is as follows:

2.5 lbs of Legends CarbCare Performance (AM & PM)
10 pills Robaxin (AM only)
1 Scoop Fish Factor (AM & PM)
1 cup of Gastro Tech (AM & PM)
Platinum Performance Hoof Care (AM Only)

Isn’t this horse a little older and a track veteran with a lot of starts?

yep, he’s 13 yo with 81 starts. Clean legs and clean bill of health via vet. Excellent flexions (vet was amazed how good they were)

Just looking to see if there is something for his back as it tends to get sore. We are hoping once his topline is completely built he wont need it anymore and hold, but always better safe than sorry

Lifeline Equine Elite
Myristol Equine (usually I pair this with a hylaronic acid, my horses love ActiFlex400)
Equinety Horse XL
Red Cell Competition Powder

You wouldn’t need to give them all to your horse but this is what my competition horses get. At the very least I would use the Equinety and the Myristol.

Also, I found Total Equine by Total Feeds helps a lot to fill in a topline.

Hi there! Recovery takes place in several stages:

Fast recovery. It begins as soon as the training is over. The body restores normal heart rate, pressure and normalizes the release of hormones.
As soon as the body has returned to its usual state, a period of slow recovery begins. Slow recovery lasts a day or two. During this period, water balance returns to normal and amino acid synthesis occurs.
Supercompensation and delayed billing. This period begins immediately after a slow recovery and lasts about a week. If from the point of view of nutrition and training you did everything right, then supercompensation occurs and your body fully receives the return from training, which means muscles increase in volume, you become stronger. If something went wrong, you picked the wrong program or your body lacked energy and special nutrients, then there is a delayed recovery, that is, the body returns to its previous level without any progress.
To avoid overtraining, be sure to follow a number of rules which you can read here - ttps://gym-expert.com/best-muscle-recovery-supplement/
