Suggestions for restraining small dog in the car

First, not my dog

A friend just got a 10 month old chi-poodle cross, currently 7 lbs (so this little guy isn’t going to be big).

She has, AFAIK, a sedan (so no SUV).

Recommendations on best/safest way to restrain this little guy in the car?

I know there is the one safety harness (haven’t chased the name yet) but how well do they work for such small dogs?

Other suggestions/recommendations? Right now he rides loose (yes, we already had that discussion  ). I told her I do some research

There are some fabric carriers that can be hooked into/onto a seat belt.

For my dogs, I used a regular harness, and had a short, thick nylon leash attached to the seat belt, and they were in the back seat. If I still had dogs, they would have to be in the back seat, because the current car has a passenger airbag, and though the seat sensor supposedly turns the front passenger air bag off, I don’t trust it.

Good point on the airbag… thanks for reminding me.

I have a size small AllSafe harness but it was almost too large for my border terrier.

Maybe the fabric carrier would do the trick. I’ve seen his photo and he’s a cute little guy but sure small.

I’ll poke around with the fabric carrier idea.

Sleepypod is the best, but very pricey. Definitely the safest, as it’s crash tested just like baby seats. I have one for my 6 lb. dog and during the day she sleeps in it in the closet. They also make harnesses that are tested but nothing for a smaller dog.

They have a few videos that shows harnesses, collars, wire crates and soft crates being tested in 35(?) mph crash tests and it’s pretty horrifying to watch. That alone made the Sleepypod worth the money.

They are crash tested like baby seats and have a few videos showing harnesses, collars, wire/plastic crates and soft carriers in 35(?)mph tests, and they’re pretty horrifying. That alone made me spend the money. My 6 lb. dog is in the larger round sleeper/carrier and will sleep in it during the day.

They also have tested harnesses, but these are for larger dogs. For the one time I might need my dog safe in an accident, I feel better knowing that she’ll be safe.

Sleepypod. I have one for my 6 lb. dog and bought it after seeing videos of wire/plastic and soft crates, harnesses and collars being tested in 35(?) mph crashes. It was horrifying and I didn’t hesitate spending the money on the round carrier/bed. My dog has the larger one and will sleep in it during the day.

They also make harnesses that are crash tested as well but are made for larger dogs. They test the same way baby car seats are tested.

I got Polo a padded nylon carrier designed for the car and airlines.
He outgrew it.

If you want it, I`ll send it

Irish E’s… how big is Polo? That might be an awesome option! Does it seatbelt in or how is it restrained?

I’ve only ever seen photos of Sprite and yes, he is little

Sleepypod was too expensive. :frowning:
