Suggestions for things for horse to play with that won't kill him?

One of my horses is a very curious, mouthy, interested horse. He reminded me of this yesterday when I was trying to set up a “horse agility” course for him and he kept messing up all of my obstacles by playing with them while I was setting them up. He picked up the tarp and carried it around, tipped over the bucket, top to bottom and then bottom to top, and investigated everything else.

He is also very interested in textures, and investigates (mouths) anything that is sticking out of anything else, and was really interested in the wool flocking that was out while his saddle was being re-flocked. He kept mouthing that, and making a face, then mouthing it again, over and over again.

He lives with another horse so his life isn’t terrible, but I think he might be happier if he had some things to play with. But he’s also very destructive, and I don’t want him to actually eat the tarp, or break the bucket and then step on the shards, etc. He has eaten Christmas lights twice, so I don’t have a lot of trust in his common sense. And he’s broken plastic buckets that were left in a stall with him.

Are there any things that I might already have lying around that I could put in there for him to play with that he couldn’t hurt himself with? I guess I could put the carrot ball toy in there empty. I will not use toys with food in them there because (1) it is a sand lot so sand colic and (2) the other horse is very food aggressive. Anything else? I don’t really want to buy anything, because that’s $$ and then it’s more junk I have to find room for when it’s not in use. I was thinking about putting a yoga ball out there, though. I am not sure.

Any suggestions?

I have a couple barrels, I think the one is a 55 gal and the other is 30 something. On the icy days this winter that we had to do indoor turnout, on the days I was around, I would throw one of those out with my guy and his turnout buddy. It kept them entertained for longer than I would have guessed and its solid; picking it up/flipping it around, pawing at it…no damage to horse or barrel. Some heavy duty cones might be a good option to try as well. I could see those being sources of entertainment too :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Wow, what an accurate description of my horse

Following with interest. Mine has a Jollyball for his unsupervised toy.

An old tire, maybe?

Not that my filly was special or anything but her favorite toy was a piece of plywood, maybe 3 ft by 4 ft that was leaning up against the fence. She dragged it into the paddock and would move it to where she wanted (Feng shui?) and stomp on it, sometimes in the early hours.

Anything leaning up against the rail was fair game. She loved running around with a lunge whip in her mouth but we stopped that.

XL dog toys, like the rubbery ones made by kong or whoever, or the big thick ropes made for tugging.

This could be fun and looks pretty durable:

Also, not as economical, but I know plenty of people that use Portagrazers in the pasture that the horses can kick around. I had one in the stall for a bit, and they are also very durable.

The low rubber feed tubs make great horse toys. They can toss them around for a good long time until they give in, and even when they rip they are not really a risk to the horse (clearly there is a horse somewhere at some time that managed to hurt themselves on one, because they are horses after all).

Jolly balls are popular.
Like someone suggested above, dog toys. Jolly ball makes a dog version with a rope attached.

I got heavy duty cones. The kind that are thick, heavy rubber. The best that I could find at the home improvement store. Then I left them out there, and now one of them has the top few inches bitten off…

She didn’t break it? I’d be worried about big wood shards.

I have one who is the exact same way, anything left within reach of his pasture will get picked up and thrown…never thought I would be in a situation where I was sprinting across a field yelling at a horse to stop swinging a hammer at his brother :joy:.

Here is a list of things I have tried:

  1. A barrel as someone else mentioned above - if you search on FB marketplace you can usually find people selling them pretty inexpensively.

  2. Large rope dog toys and jolly balls - I have these hanging where I tack up, he will bite/play with them if prompted or when he is tied there but otherwise ignores them.

  3. A treat ball - I know you don’t want food involved and honestly this didn’t work for my guy anyway - he got so frustrated when he didn’t immediately get food out that he had a full on temper tantrum.

  4. Large cardboard boxes - he will carry them, throw them, rip them apart and kick them. I haven’t left them in there unsupervised but if all the tape is off I can’t imagine how harmful they could be.

  5. Slow feed hay nets hung in various spots. Even though they have free choice hay, he seems to enjoy eating from the hay nets and will often choose them over the exact same hay free choice in a bin.

Overall, I have found that other than the hay nets, my guy ignores pretty much everything if it is left in his pasture. The novelty wears off pretty quickly once he realizes he is ALLOWED to play with something . My guy does have a very playful pasture-mate so they spend the vast majority of their time harassing each other.

My horses love their low, black rubber feed tubs to play with. If I’m feeling like giving them a really special afternoon I will put out a large cardboard box. They really enjoy being terrified by it for half an hour, then dragging it around followed by tearing it to pieces. Then I clean up after their fun… that’s the part that makes it a “special occasion” toy!

Exactly like my horse, if he’s allowed to play with something that thing is going to sit alone forever but if you forget something around he should not play with, say goodbye to that lol…horses!

Jolly ball.

I’ve also seen a lot of funny instagram reels with donkeys (in particular) that like to kill the squeaky rubber chickens :joy:

I imagine that would probably be best with supervision but they really get into that!

Is he in group turnout or in a pasture or in large stall/pen with others?

I love watching a horse play with a big exercise ball.
