Suitable stallion for Cornet Obolensky mare

Hello!

I am new to the forum and was wondering if somebody would like to give me a couple of opinions on suitable stallions for my 3-year old maiden Obolensky mare.

Her dam, Oborough was bred in Holland and is by Centurion Montfort x Daimler x Gag xx. She competed 1.20m-1.30m before being imported to Norway. I have bred three foals from her: 2 x Balougran Z and 1 x Cornet Obolensky.

The oldest by Balougran Z is now 5 and jumping 1.20 clear, and will be competing internationally this summer.

Possible options of stallions so far:

Diarado
Diamant De Semilly
Nabab De Reve
Tornesch

The mare is located in Norway. Since she is maiden we are ruling out frozen semen for now, but there are many good stallions on the European Continent that ship fresh within the limited time frame. The stallions I have listed aboove has been selected with considerations regarding capabilities, confirmations and very importantly as my mare is by Obolensky - temperament. I have ruled out one of my favourites at the moment Inschallah De Muze, as I do not know what he breeds due to his young age.

I am sorry for the long post, would just really like to present the mare and her lines as thruthful as possible for you guys to make an opinion on suitable matches.

Have you looked at any of the Darco sons available? I saw a super Ogano Sitte x Ugano Sitte young stallion in Belgium at the recent Belgian Sporthorse stallion selection. Nice representation of what the bloodlines might produce.

I was looking around for a suitable Darco, but hadn’t seen anyone yet that I thought looked right on my mare. The one you suggested looked interesting though, will have to investigate!

As a maiden, I bred her with frozen to Wittinger VDL (Indoctro x Nimmerdor). http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=10622283
The colt was a first premium at his keuring with the KWPN-NA, and he even finished in the top 5! The keuring site was 5hours from home - he loaded and shipped like a superstar and handled the strange environment with all the commotion that keurings bring like a seasoned pro. He spent his yearling year in the fields with the other boys, neither the top nor the bottom of the order. He always left the group to come over to say hi and get a grooming/scratch from me… In fact, he’s been fairly calm about everything I’ve ever done with him to date amd seems to retain his lessons well.

The mare is currently in foal to my own stallion (now gelded)… She is due late May. I am on the fence about who to use with her this year - I could go back to Wittinger, but might try a few others before going back to him… was thinking about Zapatero, Carambole or Quality Time.

You can use the following link to look at the various CO offspring. I like to use it because it shows what mares he was used on, and then in turn who those mares are being bred to… While the offspring from CO mare are still rather young, it shows you where some of the other breeders have gone and may give you some ideas. http://www.horsetelex.nl/horses/progeny/34480

Just wanted to add that I saw Inshallah de Muze at the VDL Stallion Show… WOW! I know he’s young and unproven, but I’d still considering using him.

Interesting that your colt by Wittinger shows a great temperament, as his sire is Indoctro; a stallion I have considered using on my mare.

If I had more mares I was going to breed on this year I would definately use Inshallah, however with only one mare and the uncertainty on how they would both breed, I have been advised to stick to a proven sire.

This is the hardest choice I have had to make with regards to picking stallions, as I think this particular mare could produce a smashing baby if I get the choice just right!

Just thought, but why not contact Paul Schockemöhle’s directly. They own Diarado. At one point they carried Cornet Obolensky’s semen. They even have a very good young stallion Cornet’s Balou coming along (with video of him, though Balou is not on your list).

Schockemöhle breeds hundreds of foals a year. They have used both C. Obolensky and Diarado extensively. By virtue of the numbers, they would have the most data on crosses that would work well for you. Their opinion is not dependent upon one sale or one stallion. We have always found them to be very helpful.

You will find that they have their detractors… but it seems that most all successful people do. Consider, years ago when rumors were rampant that Balou had bad temperament, they were giving accurate info on him… and over time what they have said has proven to be true.

Just a thought.

Balance temperaments and abilities

I think one approach is to identify in the pedigree the “hot” lines with the more “balanced” natures. So much of breeding is getting the head and athleticism working together. Obolenski is a good example himself. Finding info on temperaments and stallion reliability factors is important as is lightness and soundness. KWPN publishes its annual stallion statistics which provides good information you might trawl through. Their website might contain ability to search this database.

I breed dressage and show horses so you may wish to ignore my thoughts entirely!

Your mare is lovely. Clearly finds jumping a breeze! Her shoulder looks a bit upright in the photos but she seems to move quite well regardless. She has a lovely neck/neck set.

My pick would be Tornesch.

I adore this stallion. I first saw him on TV jumping in a world cup qualifier and immediately went online to find out more. I love the way he conducts himself and carries himself in the ring, and his shape over the fence. He looks like he’d be a lovely ride, even over those huge jumps. I also adore his conformation. He is very correct and has an adorable head (I know, I know - heads don’t count for much!) and lovely movement.

I had the opportunity to use a young Riverman mare for breeding, and Tornesch was my pick for all those reasons above plus his gorgeous nature. I did not go through with the breeding but I still think about using Tornesch one day.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your input!

I was definately thinking about Tornesch, however after having examined him closely, I think that his type, especially in the front won’t compliment my mare as much as Diarado will. My mare’s dam and her to other foals (not by Cornet Obolensky) has their necks set slightly too low in my opinion and I would be concerned that Tornesch might enhance that feature in the foal. I personally prefer Diarado’s outline and neck…

whoa–that is heavy to heavy. this mare has all heavy blood. and Darco is a heavy horse. wrong direction for any breeding. this mare needs to go to a lighter type & pedigree stallion.:eek:
