My 3 year old sprouted herself a nice crop of summer baby warts on her nose. I searched and it looks like the last thread we did on this was back in 2009 sooooo
Any new latest and greatest get rid of them ideas? They seem to small to crush (like too flat against her face), also she is SUPER sensitive
I know they will go away eventually but I had thoughts of maybe showing her in hand later this summer
Separate her from others and let them run their course. Since they are viral (equine papilloma virus), let her clear them on her own. Obviously, if they are in the way of tack, or basic functions, talk to your vet about removal. But the data for removal being a quicker resolution is anecdotal at best.
PS they often show up on stressed skin. Make sure your mare isn’t sunburned, being bitten by insects etc.
They can be spread! Avoid direct contact with other horses, shared grooming tools, buckets, stalls, tack etc.
Separating her is not an option. No sunburn- there are of course insects but she lives out 24/7 in the midAtlantic so there’s no getting out of that lol
They’ll go away on their own timeline. Crushing them doesn’t speed things up, and just introduces an infection risk.
I wouldn’t worry about the other horses. It’s either in the soil, or carried around by insects, it’s not just a direct contact thing.
thanks- that is pretty much along the lines of what I was thinking. Although I may try some tea tree oil ointment since I have it and I’ve heard it may help (if not at worst it will help with the bugs lol). I don’t really need to take her to a show- but murphy’s law of course the minute I thought of doing it, bingo warts haha
Rub some cod liver oil on them. I know it sounds wierd but it worked for me.
thanks- I think I read that in the old thread too. Will add that to the to try list My filly is going to either be wart free or warty and smelly lol
As the DVM told me when I was a kid, “You have 2 options–you can treat them, and they’ll be gone in about 3 months. Or you can leave them alone and they’ll be gone in about 3 months.”
Diaper rash cream will help dry the warts and keep the skin from irritation, can’t remember the brand but I just get it at Walmart.
I don’t separate. Most young horses will get them, they just have to run the course until they develop an immunity and their bodies know how to deal with it.
They shouldn’t get it again when it’s gone. Usually takes 2-3 months to go away. Suddenly they will look super mad and irritated then poof, gone.
Good luck!
In the same boat right now…my yearling colt stepped off the trailer with a muzzle full of ugly warts when he shipped in almost a month ago. They look like a real bad case of skin tags gone wild. He too is very sensitive about his muzzle being touched right now.
It seems like the only thing is to just let nature run its course and let them clear on their own. I did find a “recipe” on the internet but am skeptical…however I have observed someone using a bar of soap and a banana peel to cure scratches when nothing else worked so I might have to give this one a go! If it fails, add some salt, pepper and apple cider vinegar for a great salad dressing LOL
The cure is very simple and we have never had it fail.
Put about a 1/2 cup olive oil in a jar with a good lid.
Crush about 6-8 medium garlic cloves and add them to the olive oil.
Shake well before using.
Put on the warts 2-3 times a day with a cotton swab or a small cotton ball.
Keep mixture refrigerated.
Normally the warts will dry up and fall off within ten days to two weeks. Without treatment, I have heard of warts remaining on horses for months and months.
that is definitely a new one lol- let me know how it goes if you try it
This.
