Summer Internships

Hey guys! I know this question has been asked multiple times on this forum, but I just thought I’d ask again to get more current information. I’m currently an undergraduate junior in the Animal Science program at the U of MN. As a part of my degree, I have to complete an internship. I have an Equine Emphasis with my Animal Science major, so I’m looking to complete an internship with a breeding/training/management in mind.

I would love the internship to either be involved in racing or with the Warmblood/Sporthorse breeding/training sector. I have contacted a lot of farms, but haven’t had any luck yet. Any suggestions on where to find a summer internship? I was looking at KEMI, but sadly their program doesn’t fit into my schedule as I’m strictly looking for a summer internship.

I did my internship at Horizon Farms in Barrington, IL. They were a Thoroughbred/Standardbred training/breeding facility. There was a training internship and a breeding internship. I did the breeding and my best friend did the training. I had the BEST time of my life and loved every single minute of it. Even breaking my arm (which was non-horse related). I don’t think they are open anymore, but just thought I would share my story. Have a lot of fun, learning a lot and expect to work really hard.

Thanks guys for the suggestions so far. Keep them coming.

Highly recommend the Virginia Tech MARE Center internship. It is very competitive though, so bring your A-game.

Hey,
I breed/raise and train quality Holsteiners in Florida, standing the stallion Lotus T. We breed about 15 of our own mares besides a good number of outside mares here on the farm and have a busy collection/shipping schedule. I also have a couple of advanced degrees in Agriculture so maintaining your academic edge besides the praktikum is a given :). We also do a few embryo transfers every year. If you want to do an internship with us, you are welcome to check us out:

And “Holsteiner Stallion Lotus T” or “Prairie Pines Sport Horses” on facebook.

And if you like what you see, e-mail me or send me a pm on Facebook. I don’t check these forums too often :).

I believe Solomon farm does internships. Lots of breeding and young horses.

Good luck.

PS; just noticed they have a banner ad for their auction at the top of this page.

RolledAway, would you like to gain experience from one of the best equine Reproduction Teams in North America? I know that Jos Mottershead and Kathy St. Martin have interns at Avalon Equine Reproduction in Oklahoma. http://www.avalon-equine.com/

Thanks so much for the suggestions guys! I appreciate it.
