Summer sores

Hi there! I have a gelding that has had summer sores in his sheath for months now. I had biopsy done to confirm and he has gone through topical treatments, steroids, worming med schedule (once a week for 4 weeks, then again for another 3) and so far nothing is working. He gets some immediate improvement but when the treatment stops it goes right back to the same state. It’s driving us both crazy! I am working with a vet but are there any treatments that others have found work in the sheath area? I am so over this and I know that my boy is also! I am also concerned about him having this long term and continuing to treat with wormers and other drugs. Thanks!

ivermectrin paste applied to the wound daily may help as well as the oral paste.

also underwood ointment is claimed by many to help also. it takes daily
or twice daily attention until it’s gone.

I have the same problem with my gelding; left front pastern quarter sized sore that will not go away! Frustrating and have tried so many topicals under vet advice. Same as above horse he has been treated with ivermectin.

I have been battling the same thing with a pony I purchased this summer. He had a massive summer sore on his urethra and sores on the sheath. The vet has been out weekly for the past couple months to tranquilize him and remove all the larva from the sores. This has required cutting and digging them out as they hide in pockets below the skin. All sores are are then treated topically with Ivermectin. I kept fly repellant on his sheath during warm weather. Additionally, the pony has received numerous doses of wormer – Quest a couple times, and Ivermectin many times. During the course of treatment new Habronema parasites have appeared in new places along the shaft and head of the penis; each time they are removed. We are finally getting it under control and coming to the end of treatment. The cold weather helps. This was my first experience with summer sores. Not fun!!

I have a mare prone to summer sores. My vet uses a mixture of panalog and ivermectin to apply on the sore. I wrap those that can be wrapped and use Alushield on those that can’t. And the horse is wormed with Ivermectin.

I live in FL and I had a pony with the sheath summer sore problem and after four months of vet visits , daily treatment topically , scrubbing , and debriding my vet finally ended up surgically removing the summer sore from my ponys sheath. He said this has been the only way to get rid of them. They were so deeply imbedded under the sore that there was no way just cutting the surface and putting medication in the surface would work. I would suggest just doing this. He had to go under complete anesthesia but it was worth it. He was healed within a couple weeks.
