Sunscreen and Makeup that doesn't run or sting if you sweat

I could never wear sunscreen on my face because all the ones I tried burned my eyes. Until I found this one. It never bothers my eyes and it doesn’t make me break out.

I tried baby sun screens, too.

Have you tried any of the sunscreens made for babies?

I generally use sunscreens that use only zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients, and these days that pretty much means baby sunscreens. My experience is that they sting less than others if they get in your eyes.

Like many here, I often do not put sunscreen on my forehead because it will always be shaded when I am at the barn. That alone cuts down the sting.

It’s spendy and hard to find (I get mine via Amazon), but Blue Lizard sunblock is wonderful, wonderful stuff.

I am fanatical about applying sunscreen. For my face, I like Elta MD UV Physical Broad Spectrum SPF 41 http://www.lovelyskin.com/o/eltamd-uv-physical-spf-41. It is very mild and has just enough of a light tint so that I don’t look ghostly, plus it feels good going on, not gloppy or heavy or hard to spread.

The link I posted has this on sale at 20% off every now and then, otherwise, I’ve also purchased this product at my dermatologist.

For touch-ups during the day, such as after eating or when I begin to look shiny, I use this mineral powder sunscreen http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod5110011. Very handy to carry the little brush applicator with me and be able to use this product, without getting a typical sunscreen lotion or cream on my hands.

I have really sensitive skin and use Alba Botanica’s Mineral sunscreen. It works GREAT! Doesn’t sweat off for me at all.

I’ll only wear makeup to ride if I’m showing. It gives me a confidence boost to know that I put as much effort into my turnout as I did for my horse. Usually just a little foundation to even out my skin tone and powder to set, eyeliner and mascara. I’m so NOT a lipstick person, so I usually skip that in favor of a clear balm. No gloss, because everything sticks to it.

I never put anything above my eyebrows when I ride, since my helmet covers my forehead anyway and when I’m on the ground I’m usually wearing a ball cap.

I use the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer face & body stick. So far I have not had a problem with it running into my eyes. I have also used a tinted sunscreen stick by Shiseido that is mostly titanium dioxide I think. It is supposedly transfer-resistant but it does get on my helmet strap. But it doesn’t make your skin look whitish in photos like the baby sunscreen stuff does. I haven’t had an issue with either of these making my eyes sting.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer is pretty good. Doesn’t sting and runs minimally for most people. But I’m a big sweat ball.

Paula’s Choice has a great matte moisturizer w/ SPF30.
Never runs, never stings, never makes me look shiny.

Then I use Estée Lauder BB cream (SPF35) over the moisturizer to cover up sun damage on my face.

I’ve gone through a ton of sunscreens - Neutrogena, Shiseido, La Roche Posay, Eucerin moisturizer with SPF, and a host of others. They either broke me out or clogged my pores, but that’s my sensitive skin and not necessarily the product’s fault. Shiseido’s ultimate sun protection had the least amount of irritation, but it also left a white cast, which I didn’t mind for being outside.

My perfect dream sunscreen lately is Biore UV Aqua Rich (SPF50, PA++++) - it’s inexpensive, doesn’t sting when I put it around my eyes, and doesn’t leave a white cast. I haven’t had any issues with it running and it hasn’t irritated my skin at all despite daily use. The downside is it has to be ordered online and shipping can take awhile.

Elta MD seems to be well-recommended, as does La Roche Posay’s anthelios, though a few people have reported the latter turning them yellow. Neutrogena and Clinique seem to have some loyal followers, too. Biore Perfect Face Milk has good reviews, but I think that one is also only available online.

For the makeup part, a primer is your friend! For the eyes there’s Milani eye primer, Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Urban Decay Primer Potion, Wet’n’Wild Fergie primer, NARS eyeshadow base. I must use a primer for my eyeshadow or it’s creased and faded in less than 10 minutes of application; with primer it can last all day, I can go riding and sweat, or go hiking, and my eye makeup stays in place. If it’s incredibly humid and I’m extra sweaty, it might run a bit, but nothing that can’t be fixed with a quick wipe under the eye with the rest staying more or less in place.
There are quite a few face primers out there, too. If you’re using a liquid foundation, setting with powder can help keep things in place. There are also setting sprays (Urban Decay All Nighter, MAC Fix +) meant to help your makeup stay. If excess oil is a problem, blotting sheets will remove it without taking off streaks of makeup, but for sweat I just dab with a tissue or cloth.

I went into Sephora over the weekend to get some new make-up. One thing I’ve been really concerned about lately has been sun protection. I used to paint in streetpainting festivals when I was in my 20’s and was really bad about sunscreen and am now paying the price with sun damage.

Anyway, I was turned on to a new product while there. The lady said it’s a very popular product. It is not tinted, but can go on and leave a matte finish. It’s a sunscreen loose powder that you brush on. I bought some but haven’t tried it yet.

My dermatologist was also telling me about an SPF tinted and non-tinted face powder that you can get at pharmacies. I really like this idea because sometimes I want a non-oily finish but don’t want to reapply the whole thing.

Oh good call on the primer. It’s one of those things I have but use very rarely.

I get occasional samples of the Smashbox primer and love it. I also have a tube of Mirabella Primer that a make-up artist friend gave me that I use sometimes.

I haven’t seen this suggested yet, but good quality mineral makeup has a good SPF in it, enough to get through several hours at the barn. It also tends to give slightly better coverage, IME, once I’ve gotten a bit warm.
My dermatologist recommended I switch from bareMinerals, which I liked, to Jane Iredale, which I love. Her explanation was that, for problem skin, barn dirt, horse hair and even racetrack chemicals are all irritants. The mineral makeup creates a protective barrier that helps prevent breakouts. My cycle was to wear makeup during breakouts, get it cleared up, stop wearing the stuff, breakout again.
I can’t speak to the drugstore brands, but I had excellent luck with the bareMinerals products and now the Jane Iredale. It provides as much coverage as you want, SPF, and it doesn’t run. At all.
