Sunscreen for pink noses

It’s approaching that time of year again -sigh-

My horse’s nose is almost entirely white/pink, and therefore she sunburns. She haaaates fly masks with long noses (I tried an extended Kensington CatchMask for a while), never ever stops snorting/headshaking and tries to run away when you go to put it on. But her nose gets so irritated and flaky when it isn’t protected :frowning:

What do you use for sun protection on sensitive horses?

I don’t use sunscreen, one of mine had a reaction. I just use Zinc Oxide. Plain white or the fun colored ones if I find them on sale. Its water proof so the dew doesnt wash it off while grazing like sunscreen would. Plus my white gelding looked great with a blue or pink nose! 3 days a week I couldn’t go in the morning, but 4 days kept it from getting sore in the first place. Just dont wait too long to start - rubbing it on a tender nose is torture.

For a while I used No-Ad sunscreen - baby formula, waterproof. It disappeared (around here at least) for many years, and I finally saw it again yesterday at Walmart. It’s really thick and stays put pretty well, at least it did, hopefully they didn’t change the formulas. The baby formula was apparently very soothing, even on a bit of a burned nose.

That said, I have heard that zinc oxide powder is the bomb for this sort of thing, much better staying power than any lotion.

There’s always Desitin too in a pinch - 40% zinc oxide formula not the 10%. Generic is fine. The higher zinc means more water-shedding and staying power. But over time even the generic would get pretty $$$.

I’ve had good luck with Neutrogena SPF 50 or SPF 100 Moisturizer. Pricey, yes. But maresy has very sensitive skin and this doesn’t add to the problem.

I do get funny looks at the drug store, though, when I buy 5 or 6 tubes at a time …

The best I ever had was a combined sunblock and moisturizer by Vaseline. :sigh: They stopped making it eons ago.

Now I buy the store brand sunblock at Shoppers. I read labels and try to get one without added scent. Shockingly, baby sunblock has added scent.

I use zinc ointment as well. It’s good because it soothes as well as protects. My white nose won’t wear long nose flymasks either - he leaves them lying in the field, hoping I won’t find them. I don’t bother any more and just use a regular mask on him.

I had one horse who had such a fine summer coat his blaze burned from his snip to the bottom of his flymask. We went through a lot of zinc ointment. He was happy to wear a long nose when I finally got one and it made a huge difference.

I’ve had good luck with water-proof baby sun block. No skin irritation and seems to last all day.

I’ve tried so many different sunscreens over the years and never seemed to find that perfect one. I find that even the sport and waterproof ones don’t last especially after maresy goes to have a drink.

I finally settled on a nice smear of Desitin. She actually tolerates me putting that on much better than sunscreen and because it’s nice and thick, I can see where I’ve put it and if I missed any spots. I also find it stays on even until the next day. Bonus that it’s soothing in case she does get a bit of a sunburn.

I have a Paint gelding with a pink nose and have used Coppertone Sport SPF-50 for years. It works really well and I try to get it on him daily.

I guess it must be getting close to spring – the annual sunscreen thread has arrived!

I use no-ad sport sunscreen which is free of irritants. Applied twice daily. And night turnout helps a lot as well.

I really like my pony sunblock. A little pricey, but it’s easy to apply & lasts forever (as long as you don’t spill it). It works great & one application lasts the whole day.
