Sunscreen?

Any recommendations for a sunscreen for a very pink nosed horse?

I just use the waterproof human baby formula, and apply each morning.

Put zinc oxide on the nose every day. Clean off the old, put on a new layer.
I tried all the human and horse sunscreens on Cloudy’s rump and neck, he’s 50% pink skinned and 50% light grey pinto, and only zinc oxide worked. His pink nose has never burned.
zinc oxide in the tubes works in southeast ga heat

Either Zinc Oxide as above, or Desitin/diaper cream.

Or a fly mask that drapes down over the nose. If it fit right it would work as a physical barrier that might be easier to use daily. I live in Albuquerque where the sun is so close you can touch it and haven’t had any issues with sun burned noses like I did back in the mid west. I think the dew on morning grass/wet muzzle magnifies the suns rays and causes the burning. Just my two cents.

Won’t wear a fly mask and is in a 50 acre pasture…I’d never find it!

Diaper rash cream all the way! Regular sunscreen just doesn’t stay put or protect against the morning dew quite like diaper rash cream does.

Desitin works wonderfully and will also heal a sunburnt nose in a day or two. But my mare hates hates hates it on her nose, the smell and texture. You get one chance to smear it on, and then she’s got her head in the air or out at the other end of the pasture. I’d love to find a less offensive treatment!

I bought a new sunscreen last year. I’m always looking for the ones without “parfum” in the ingredients list because it’s just another chemical that we don’t need to be exposed to.

Anyway, the one I got was oil free, non-greasy, and zinc free (this seemed to be the latest thing). Some mornings I didn’t apply sunscreen for whatever reason, but most mornings I did. After a couple of weeks I noticed that his nose was consistently less burned the day after he missed the sunscreen. I also noticed that I seemed to be burned as if I hadn’t used sunscreen at all on the days I didn’t reapply before the second ride.

It appeared that whatever the base this sunscreen used magnified the intensity of the sun and increased the severity of the burn once the screen portion had worn out. Needless to say I chucked it out.

I went back to the old standby zinc ointment for the wrinkled with disgust white nose. Which is not to say he didn’t have the same reaction to sunscreen.

Edit to add the offending sunscreen was 50spf uva/uvb protection “Life” brand from Shoppers Drug Mart.
