Super Cheap Hay at Weaverland Auction in PA

Hey guys,

Just wanted to pass along that hay was going very cheap today at Weaverland Auction in Lancaster County PA. I only stayed for a few loads since I bought one pretty quickly, but price per ton was almost $100 less than it was at New Holland on Monday. I bought 3.62 tons of small square baled 2nd cut grass hay, clean, dry, and sound for $170/ton. Same load was selling for $260-$270+/ton on Monday. Someone else before me lucked out with 2 tons of grass hay for $150/ton. Auction is every Thursday at 10.

Anyways, hope that helps some people out! Hay can be tricky to buy this time of year.

Here is a mystery- this is the link to the PA Dept. of Ag site, and the hay prices as reported last week at all of the sales in PA, and a couple out of state:

http://www.agriculture.state.pa.us/agriculture/cwp/view.asp?a=391&q=131582

They do not show any hay at Weaverland going for that price

I don’t doubt your word- I am just wondering what the story is?

I know, I just checked that out this morning. I can show you the receipt  Not sure what the deal with the reporting is. The only thing I could think was that the bottom number is the average of the large bale (square and round) and the high number was the average for the small bales, but both numbers seem high. Like I said, I only stayed for the first maybe 5-6 loads before I bought one, so not sure what the other loads went for. If the average was at the prices posted I’m sure happy I bought early!!

ETA: Maybe they factored in the taxes to the price per ton? If they considered my load mixed hay, 170 + tax = $180 which is the low of the posted prices, but that doesn’t account for the load that I saw go for around $150. Shrug

Could one of you share how I get to Weaverland and is it weekly? I might need to take a drive over in the next few weeks to hold me over.

All of the sales on the link that I provided are held weekly- there are phone numbers on the page, so that you could contact them, and get the exact address, and mapquest, or use your GPS to get there.

Hope that helps!

My GPS?? hehe, I’m far too old fashioned for one of those!

Maybe they are trying to keep prices up by not reporting some lower prices. The auctioneers make a percentage on the sale price… just a possibility.

I have found plenty of hay from local PA farmers recently. They have been hoarding it, holding out for big prices, I think. Now with spring around the corner they need to get rid of it and the prices are coming down, not to where they were last year but far less than they were a month ago. Makes you wonder how real this shortage was around PA.

I agree with you, completely. I think they somehow thought they could get the prices that the poor horse folks down South have been having to pay- without going down South!

Now, they are sitting on mows stillway too full of hay- and May is fast approaching. If you can hold out until next month, you could probably fill your loft, and a reasonable- comparatively- price!

Here is something interesting- this link will take you to the PA Dept of Ag site prices for the hays sales last week- while they aren’t dropping precipitiously, they are coming down- and the top end is not anywhere near where it had been.

I need to find some hay about a ton or two, I can fit about 80 bales in my trailer. Can someone give me a good contact?

How much can you get from an auction, is it sold only in huge quantities?

Thanks. I will go as far as Lancaster or Gettysburg to get it.

I haven’t been there but the farmer who used to keep my pony says you can get anywhere from a pickup load to several tons. Just depends on who turns out to sell at any given auction.

There is also a hay auction at Green Dragon Farmer’s Market in Ephrata, PA. Not sure of what day or time but they have a website–info should be on there. If not, call them…

Good luck everyone!

Hi Guys,

Sorry about the late reply but i’m looking for some hay at cheap prices, right now i need 1/2 a ton of hay but that may be increasing soon just waiting on confirmation.

Does anyone have any good websites or anything that is doing cheap hay as of right now??

thanks in Advance

Try www.lancasterfarming.com then look under classifieds, then feed and seed

My primary purpose in putting up this site is to introduce my straw bale house plans. The scroll bar on the right lists plans by size in square feet (inside). Click a link to see plan views (or elevations) of concept houses. Most of these plans can be built with more than one roof design…thus very different elevations are possible and may be shown.

You have to PAY to see the advertisements in the Lancaster Farmer!!!???:no::mad:

Only $49.00 to look at the classifieds folks…

FOr the mathematically challenged amongst us, about how many bales did that work out to be, InstigatorKate?

thathorse- let’s assume they are average 40lb bales. There are 50 40-lb bales in a ton. Her price was $170/ton so it would be $170/50= $ 3.40 per bale.

If they are heavier 60lb bales- then $170/33.3 = $5.11 per bale

Check out craigs list, I’ve been seeing quite a few hay ads lately–can’t vouch for the quality.

Since I moved a little out of range of the local auction delivery, I went to the auction and collected the cards of a few people who had hay I liked. Most of them were happy to make a contact and deliver hay to the southern part of the county. Prices were decent too! If you can, it would be worth your while to take a day off, check out the different loads, and pick up the cards of local farmers. They sell it cheaper than the average hay broker.
