We just got a new haul of racing saddles in, but there’s a problem, their seats are yellow. Yellow tack, silks, or number cloths are considered really bad luck here in Alberta Canada, so these saddle seats will need to be painted over or covered with a seat cover. This situation got me thinking, what superstitions are local to other regions?
Here we all wear Saint Christopher’s Medalions sewed into the harness of our helmets, regardless of our religion or lack thereof. There’s this tradition of throwing our first set of gear or silks in the dirt and stomping on them (our silks have hit the dirt and therefore we won’t.) If you drop your helmet before a race, its a bad omen. And yellow is such a terrible colour that it was removed from the number cloths at certain Albertan tracks.
Have any local superstitions at your tracks?
