SUPPLEMENT ADVICE- o3 omega complete or platinum healthy weight?

Hi everyone!
i was wondering everyone’s opinion on 03 animal health’s omega complete supplement, vs platinum performance healthy weight. both are claiming to be a balance of omega 3 : 6 ratios.

additionally i was curious about everyone’s opinions of joint supplements. the omega complete claims to be a joint support, but i may get the glucosamine from PP, per my vets opinion.

my horse is a 6 year old competitive morgan who suffers from allergies and ulcers (but is being treated vigorously by a vet so no worries)

My feed that I used to feed (Nutrena) and now my balancer (Progressive) has Omega 3 and 6. I now supplement with human Omegas that I get on serious sale at various stores. WAY cheaper than some supplements.

I have only given joint supplements that have a proven track record, such as Cosequin or Corta-Flex. I would give only known joint supplements such as hyaluronic acid, glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate (esp the later two) in forms that are known to be distributed after digestion, and are known to work in a blinded test. I would critically look at PP’s formulation and their “joint supplement” additives. Anyone can put “joint supplements” on the label, and anyone can sell glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate, but they are not absorbed the same way. Ask your vet to explain the efficacy of PPs formula.

There is no such thing as a “balanced” Omega supplement, because there is no known/published balance. Best we can assume is about 4:1 O3:O6, since that’s what grass is (on average).

The fact that Equine Omega Complete is 1:5 for O3:O6 makes it useless as a “balanced” omega EFA supplement.

Omega 9 is not an EFA, so while not harmful, is fairly irrelevant for anything other than as a fat.

If you’re concerned about EFAs, use ground flax. If you’re concerned about just a fat source, use whatever is cheap and available (just don’t use corn oil, waaaay too high in O6).

What are you trying to accomplish with those two supps when the vet is treating the problems you’ve identified?

I use healthy weight oil. i original started it for a hard keeper, recommended by a vet. once that one got to a good weight, i kept it onboard for shine. it is a good product. No experience with the other. Also, if i need to give a fussy horse meds, they seem to like meds coated in HW oil.
