Supplements and feed - there can be too much of a good thing

So posting this in hunter/jumper because in horse care things can get off topic of the sport - have you had experience with supplements that are supposed to be “total care” so to speak when added to good feed are then sort of an overdose of certain ingredients? And how do you avoid that?

You can avoid by using FeedXL though there may be some guessing involved unless you get your feed analyzed.

If you are talking about bagged feeds then you can get the nutritional guarantee online if it isn’t on the bag. Either via Feed XL or with pen and paper, if you know the weight of feed you are feeding, you can figure out the amount of nutrients horse is getting.

In particular you don’t want a selenium overdose, that is dangerous. You don’t want much iron. You want the correct ratios of zinc, copper, calcium, magnesium. And you don’t want too many sugars or carbs.

Its also ideal to test your hay so you know what minerals need boosting up.

If you need a basic introduction to horse nutrition I like Julie Gettys book Feed Your Horse Like a Horse.
