Supposed pregnant mare showing signs of heat

I have a 23 year old welsh pony mare who was confirmed in foal last year (June 2012 was her due date) at 14 days and again at 30 days. Was not checked again after that because she lives with the stallion and never showed signs of coming back in to heat.
WELL today I was watching the two of them in the field and to my disappointment I noticed her “squatting,” squealing and winking. I immediately took her out of the field and put a call into the vet.
Please tell me your stories that this has happened to you but your mare was still in foal!!!

Also to add - stallion was convinced she was ready.

I personally I have known two mares that did that until the day they foaled. 1 mare showed MORE of a heat when she was in foal…go figure! :S Fingers crossed your mare is just teasing the stallion.

We had one TB mare that teased all through her pregnancies. Some of our other mares have occasionally teased when pregnant. So stay calm - doesn’t your mare look pregnant by now? Ponies usually show quite easily.

I wish I had a good story for you. Keep in mind that if mares slip a pregnancy after the endometrial cups have formed (around 40 days), they will not come back into heat til the next year. Hope this is not the case for you!

Years ago, we had an older TB mare who showed signs of being in season EVERY month after we bred her. She still LOOKED pregnant, though.

Her due date/month came & went. Nothing.

We stopped keeping her in & checking her, figuring old mare . . . hysterical pregnancy?

The night she DIDN’T come up from pasture when we went to feed, we went looking, brought her in & she presented us with a lovely colt.

She carried more than 12 months.

[So if you think “better late than never” . . . this is really a pretty good story!]

Sad to report that the mare is not in foal :frowning:
Thank you to everyone who responded to my post.

Better luck this go around.

Awww. Sorry to hear that CrownRidge. (I checked out your site from your link though… wow… you have some very nice mares and horses!!!).

My mare is at 303 days today and still displays the same obnoxious hussy behavior she always has with our gelding, who is in a neighboring paddock. Even saw a wink the other day. I would be worried, but she is surely still in foal since she is HUGE and I see movement in her belly almost daily.

I’m sorry to hear that. I have one that I was really looking forward to that I’m pretty sure is empty also. I hate it when that happens. :frowning:

Sorry to hear that crown! My maiden TB is squirting/winking, etc…, and has been since about 7 months, but is still in foal, vet checked the HB when she opened up the caslicks, he/she is alive and well. My mare has always been an, er, hussy…

Thanks Tapperjockey, Gretchen and mpsbarnmanager.

I was so looking forward to this foal too! Oh well :frowning: She is happily retired and keeping the yearlings in line lol
