Supposed spay incontinence in female dog, Proin no longer working. Advice?

We have a Potcake from Turks & Caicos (mutt, 45 lbs.) She was spayed at the recommended time. She started leaking urine, mostly at night on our bed (!) and was put on Proin. (BTW this is our SECOND female dog w/this issue and I am hearing about it more and more from others too…WTH??) She is 45 lbs. and gets half Proin in the a.m. and a whole pill at night.

She is now 5 and is having incontinence day and night. When we come home, we find urine on the sofa where she was laying. At night, she leaks urine, spins, cleans herself, lies back down.

Our vet is out of town until Wed. but we have a call in to them. The tech said he will probably recommend a bladder ultrasound. (She has been tested many times for UTI’s and always negative).

Otherwise she is a sweet, normal dog. We are frustrated for her and us. The Proin is still working fine on our other dog (A golden) - we have not had to increase her dose.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions besides “up the Proin” which I believe we are almost maxed out on…I feel badly for her. We’ve tried p.m. diapers but they don’t stay on her well. (she is built like a Viszla) We hope to have her another 9-10 years so there has to be as solution for this!!

Two thoughts,

  1. She may have a bladder infection, that makes them drink and pee more.

  2. Is she taking the chewable or the tablet. I found they did not work the same.

What dosage is she on? We started mine on 1/2 of a 50 mg tab am & pm which worked well for about a year. She started “leaking” again so we added another 1/4 tab at night. She was good for another 6 months or so. She has now been on 3/4 of a 50mg tab am & pm for the past 9 years. I was told we can go up to a full tablet if needed am & pm. She is a 68-70lb boxer/lab mix.

You can ask your vet if they have any experience with estriol products- it’s another option for spay incontinence (similar to estrogen replacement therapy in women undergoing menopause).

Thanks all - bladder infection has been checked numerous times. She doesn’t drink more than normal. She is on the Proin 50 mg tablet - liver colored chewable. Not a “pill”. Interesting that they could work differently. It’s a big pill for her and I often wondered if it even dissolved in her system! I will ask about estriol.

Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is another one that might work.

It’s very inexpensive and works pretty well. Note: women need to be careful handling these meds. Unlike Proin, Estriol and DES are estrogens.

Thanks for that reminder, it’s something that didn’t cross my mind. One of mine recently started on Incurin (estriol) and although I haven’t been touching it directly, it’s always good to be aware of that. It pops out of the packaging so easy my skin doesn’t touch the pill, but definitely good to keep aware of…

Cystoscopy & retrograde urethrogram are a few of the options left if you want to hunt for a cause.

Thanks all - the doc prescribed DES and we started it tonight. Fingers crossed it works! Vet said I should see a difference within a week.
