Surcingle Shopping -- Help!

The Princess Mare needs to spend some time working on her topline without a rider and my lungeing surcingle is ancient and I didn’t ever like it much, anyway.

I need to shop for a new one, but haven’t used them enough to know what to look for (I have tended to put sidereins on with saddle/bridle and lunge like that, but we have problems already with the saddle sliding forward, so I don’t like that idea for this horse) and what options are out there.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Libby

The more rings the better and the surcingle should be made fairly substantially. I prefer all leather, but a good solid webbing with leather reinforcements is good, as well. This is the one I have right now.

That one Yellow posted is probably your best item for $$.
I don’t have a very nice surcingle. But I sure could use one. I like that one for the wither molding. And like she mention, lots of rings.

I find that I don’t like the girths on any surcingles. I think what I would do is buy that one that Yellow posted, then buy the appropriate size dressage girth to replace the girth that comes with.
I like a wee bit of elastic on my girth–and also a soft girth.
So maybe one of these

only 30 and 32 left which would work for a surcingle I think. And then just buy a nylon doggie collar to slip on it if you need a girth ring.

that would be the perfect surcingle for my taste. And I use a super thick pad. I’m always freaked about about wither pressure…

I agree that most girths that come with surcincles just plain suck. I like to switch them out for the cheap fuzzy dressage girth smartpak sells.

I bought a surcingle similar to this last year: http://claymaier.com/supply-dvd-tutorials/surcingle-with-pad/

I wanted one made of all leather and no wither molding. The exact one I purchased is a “western” model of the one listed above but it was cheaper and my horse doesn’t know the difference. Schutz Bros. is the maker of both I think (made in USA!). I emailed Schutz directly to make a smaller girth for my daughter’s pony and they were very easy to work with. So if you need a different ring configuration than what they are offering, you could probably work directly with the company.

BTW–a really, really good lunge cavesson makes all the difference too. I’ve seen people struggle with the heavy, cumbersome cavessons that just don’t work well. A well made lunge cavesson is truly a wonderful thing to use.

Try Schneiders , World Champion. or Show Horse Tack

I’ve World Champion’s training surcingle (looks like the one at Show Horse) for years & it’s held up great, even with a horse with a destructive streak. I didn’t see it on their website individually, but if you call them, they will get you what you need.

LaSalle & Fennells have them too, but they’re to rich for my blood.

I puchased a great webbing girth with the waffle underneath and excellent padding. I use it with one of the racetrack cloths folded at the wither with a regular pad underneath. The girth is great. I don’t know what brand it is, I’d have to look and I’m not even sure it has it on it. Bought it at Congress several years ago and it’s still in great condition. It also has a ton of rings on it and has held up wonderful. I love it because I can put it between different horses easily, and can clean it off in literally five seconds with a sponge. Excellent indeed. Easy, durable, interchangeable, and comfortable for the horse. Can’t ask for better. Leather is nice, but I’m not a fan because it can be a pain sometimes and much more effort to maintain. For general stuff like that, congress is a great resource.

I have this one and I absolutely love it.

LOVE THIS!! I’m needing to buy a surcingle as well, and this is definitely the one I like the best of the ones posted.

It is fantastic, you wont be sorry.

Reviving …

Any thoughts on what style is best for horse with sore back under where saddle goes? Specifically wondering about the wither pads on a lot of them. TIA

I like this one. Hasn’t seemed to be bothersome.

I second the one from Schneider’s. I bought mine four years ago and haven’t been disappointed. Worth every penny!
