Does anyone have cameras around their house and barn? We’ve had some … odd things happen. Would really like to hear from people in the know about setting up some cams, and what all is involved.
They are pretty straightforward to set up now. Smartsung smartcam is a good deal. Can set up to TV or computer and also can download the app and watch from your phone. Picks up on sound as well. We have ours hooked up to the computer and it runs off WiFi so no wires or cables needed.
I have a Swann system that is fairly good. Not wireless. Nightvision is good quality. Our wifi was the problem with using all the functionality (remote viewing via phone). Easy to review from hard drive. I had some stationary cameras and a PTZ.
We also use game cams. Have 1 set up at the auto waterer right now to monitor horses drinking habits (and raccoons as well apparently). Has a screen to review on the spot any pics or videos or you can take the SD card out and look on laptop.
I guess it depends on what you are trying to capture and where.
I have the Arlo camera system and I’ve been pretty happy with it. My only issue has been the wifi signal down at our barn. We put in a booster and that helped, but I can’t always access the camera inside of the barn (it is set to motion detector, and I can always review the logs - just can’t always watch live).
while you are at it you might want to add this wireless WL00Z-1 Smart Water Flow Detector to the barn’s water line… every couple of months it seems I forget to shut off the water when filling the water troughs
I’ve been looking at this one–it’s well reviewed in several places and the 100% wireless capability is nice. Glad to hear you’re happy overall. I think I’ll have the same issue with wifi. Do you keep the base unit in the barn, or in the house?
@sisu27 I have a game cam. Looking for a system. Not eager to run ethernet to barn, though, so really looking for wifi.
Kind of intrigued by this. Price is right, reviews are good overall. Thoughts?
And that’s a nifty gadget, clanter! Will keep it in mind, too.
We went with the company that sets out schools and supermarket security cameras.
They put them up hard wired and we can add more if we need to.
You can also buy some on the internet and then monitor them thru the Cloud, but those are more apt to be hacked.
A local lady came home yesterday morning and caught some men burglarizing her home, confronted them and was beaten badly.
Now everyone here that didn’t have an alarm system is looking at putting one up.
Bluey, do you pay for service for that system, or do they just set it up and turn it over?
Not ruling out something like that…
You can go ask your local schools, supermarkets, banks who they use, who is reliable.
They will do what you want, put a system up for you at a very reasonable cost, compared with what you would have to pay for it yourself over the internet, they will monitor it if you want in any of many ways, or you can do so yourself the way they will set it up.
You can have recording that you can go back and check yourself, you can have internet connection you can see the cameras from anywhere, some even have panning capacities in larger spaces.
The charges if they monitor tend to be a few dollars a month for basic services, to around $20 a month for full monitoring, etc, but you don’t have to sign with them if you don’t want to.
I would check around, also on the internet and see what fits you best.
We have Nest cameras and I love them. We have wi-fi at the house and our barn is about 1/4 mile down the drive from the house. My internet provider came out and did a point to point stream and boom - wi-fi at the barn and Nest cameras so I can spy on my boys 24/7. The stream is crystal clear and I can see remarkably well at night too.
We have two Arlo Pro base units, 8 cameras and absolutely love them! One base for the house and barn within 300’ of the house, and the other for the indoor arena and attached barn with it’s own wifi. Purchased all at Best Buy, who matched prices on Amazon. I found it was much cheaper to purchase a base and two camera package plus a separate four camera package for $834, than the pre-packaged base and 6 cameras for $949. I purchased a wifi booster but haven’t installed it yet. I need more cameras for that and need to do a camera test for tricky locations first to determine a need. I don’t need the booster for the current cameras, but I will probably need it once installing camera’s on the opposite outer arena wall. Exterior siding is metal.
Connectivity was quick and easy, about 3-5 minutes per camera to get them up and running. The online app, phone app, text and email notifications works perfectly. I renamed each base unit and each camera location. You can also download and save your motion detection videos. If you have up to 5 camera’s, Arlo offers free 7 day video storage. If you don’t download them, they disappear after 7 days. If you have more than 5 camera’s you have to pay. They also offer lengthier storage options for a fee.
That poor woman. Is she ok? The Arlo Pro camera system that we bought has a 100+ decibel siren. It can be triggered remotely, by motion or by audio. Your post reminds me that we need to test out all three ways to trigger the siren on both bases. Thanks!
Thank you for asking, we don’t know much, the sheriff is not saying much, it is an ongoing investigation.
It sure has everyone scared until we know more.
Nothing like that happened before here.
We are a very tiny, rural community.
I think that, while alarm systems may not stop criminals, it may let the police catch them so they don’t keep harming others.
Plus those systems also help with other than may be happening, like fires or animals getting in the wrong places, etc.
The advantage of an outside source monitoring also is that, if the ones breaking in take your monitoring equipment with them, there is the outside source with that information also to catch them at it.
Agree with the Arlo pro. We got 2 Arlo pros for our barn. I love how I get to monitor the babies while I’m away. Its motion detection is nice. The only downside is the battery life. I really wish they’d improve this one.
Please allow me to hi-Jack :))
i need to strike while the husband iron is hot and REALLY interested in a WiFi security system!
Those of you using WiFi, how does your system affect your data usage? We have Verizon — where we live that is the only service that doesn’t drop a signal anywhere on our road.
The farthest end of my barn is 425’ from the house ---- would I likely need another box at the barn?
DH likes the Arlo Pro which has rechargeable batteries but we are 70 and not too keen on climbing the extension ladder if the batteries don’t stay charged for several months.
Thanks in advance and thanks to the OP for letting me interrupt:)))
I am in no way any expert of this but being a private network that does not run through an offsite provider …how could that affect your data usage since you are running this through your hub?
If it is clear line of sight you can boost/extend the range of a WiFi by use of a Yagi antenna
I personally have IGTA Security camera system installed in my house and barn. These cameras provide high quality filming, to help me to properly identify the person, just in case. If money is a big concern, you can save yourself a lot of money by just installing the appearance of an alarm. Hope this helps.
Technology has gotten to a point where it is very easy to do. Lots of wireless camera options that let you watch what’s happening on your property, whether you are home or away. If you are concerned, I would not hesitate to take the plunge
Oh, no, no, no, no, no - you don’t get to allude to a mystery story on this board and not tell it. Come on, now!
