Survey: What's the typical personality profile of a horseback rider? Looking for participants!

Hello everyone,

We are scientists from the Ruhr-University in Bochum in Germany and currently researching how athletes from different sports and at different proficiency levels differ in their personalities.

We created a survey in which you are asked to characterize the typical athlete one meets in your sport and the ideal athlete for your sport. When choosing your sport from our list “Horseback Riding” or “Equestrian Vaulting” are probably the best fit.
The survey takes about 20 minutes and as compensation, we will later inform you about the typical personality profile of your sport!

Feel free to share the link with other people of your/other sports!
If you have questions, leave them in the comments and we will try to answer them.

Thank you so much in advance!

In the US there’s no 1 type of rider. I’ve found different disciplines attract different types of people.

^ I agree.

The whole question seems a bit dodgy, to be honest . . . like something a marketing firm would do.

Horseback riding isn’t one single sport. Different disciplines attract different types of people as CFFarm has said above. I got the chance to attend the European Pony Championships a few years ago which include dressage, show jumping, eventing and horseball all on one site over a week, it was really interesting seeing how the children from various nationalities in the different disciplines appeared similar to each other in each discipline and different from the other disciplines. The dressage kids were quiet, conscientious and attentive to detail, as adult dressage riders tend to be, while the horseball kids were very rowdy!

I tried to do the survey but it got stuck on page 3

I tried to do it but found the questions often difficult. Maybe it’s because of a language issue and maybe they are designed that way. I didn’t finish it.

Europe and the U.S. have very divergent equestrian communities. Perhaps a consultant conversant in U.S. practices would be a good thing.

Not going to bother with survey because it’s not a properly thought out question.

There is no doubt some winnowing out that goes on as riders move up to elite levels, but whether I would call all those riders ideal horsemen is quite another matter. Plus I have no idea what they are like IRL as I have no chance to meet them.

Riding is both an art and a skill. I spend more time thinking about the preferred attitude and skill set of a horseman versus an athlete. Note I didn’t say personality. There are ways of acting that you develop around horses, alert calm methodical, patient but effective. That doesn’t need to be your base personality necessarily.

These folks aren’t always competitors, they may be in the horse industry as trainers, Colt starters, breeders, working ranchers or just amateur recreational riders.

Well said!

Typical personality profile of a horse back rider?

looks at a question like this with deep suspicion, and refuses to click the link.

Sees a claim of the perfect Dressage bit, clicks the link ‘just in case’

Curiosity got the better of me and I started the survey… Not sure if it’s a language barrier or what, but the questions struck me as really odd and almost sinister. I don’t see how they’re assessing personality either, it seems more situation-focused.

Darn it, Zombie thread. Now I want to know the results!
