sway bars? weight distribution hitch? long trip with 4 Star 2 horse slant with tack room

I have had my '97 4 Star 2 horse with tack room for a number of years. I haul with a 2014 RAM 1500 hemi v-8 full size quad cab short bed. My trips are usually on rural, flat Illinois roads and take under 60 minutes. My tow vehicle will not be changing so no need to comment that I need a bigger truck. I have searched the forums and reviewed previous posts on this topic. I plan to go to an RV service center this week to get their advice, too.

I have two long haul trips coming up and am wondering if I need/would benefit from sway bars and/or a weight distribution hitch. One trip I will be hauling a medium pony 12 hours from Chicago to Oklahoma. The other will involve two 16.2 hand horses 9 hours from Chicago to Nashville. Both trips will involve the interstate with some hills, no real mountains. Until now I have avoided interstate driving with my trailer. My trailer hauls great on rural roads and I have never noticed it sway. My concern is all of the big trucks on the interstates. I want to be safe and have my horses be comfortable. While I know that people travel double that distance, for me, these will be “long trips.”

Note: my trailer gets annual maintenance and a safety inspection every six months. All new tires in 2015.

Thank you for your suggestions and input!

I love my equalizer hitch. Before I got it, I watched my trailer start to fishtail behind our truck when my husband was going down a hill and big curve. We bought one right after that. I love how rock solid my truck and trailer feel with it.

We have the Equal–i-zer Hitch on our Ram truck: https://www.equalizerhitch.com/

Recently put Airtabs on one trailer and the MPG increase has been great:http://airtab.com/; this product is also supposed to help with the big 18-wheelers passing, but my husband has not yet noticed that (the anti-sway assistance) with this trailer, which is towed with the Equal-i-zer hitch.

I too highly recommend. We had an antisway device welded on and boy does it make a difference. No matter the wind nor semis flying by I don’t feel a thing.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I am going to look into both options and see what makes sense. I appreciate your responses!
