Sweet Potato Dog treats - homemade !

My dogs love those chewie sweet potato ‘fries’ - but with all the scares about dog treats from China, I did some research on how to make my own.

They came out really well - they are pretty chewy and the pups love them !

Here’s the recipe :

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees

Scrub sweet potatos well - I didn’t bother peeling.

Slice into 1/4 to 1/2 inch ‘planks’, then turn and slice again to make fries.

Place on ungreased cookie sheet with some space in between.

Bake for 3 hours, turning halfway through.

Store in the fridge, they are supposed to keep 3 weeks but these won’t last that long I’m sure.

I used about 4 lbs of potatos, and that was enough fries for 2 2 standard cookie sheets. I picked the loose ones and tried to get the longer ones that were even circumfrence.

heck, i don’t to ANYTHING to the sweet potatoes for my dogs, and cannot keep enough in the house!..

i can toss whole ones into the yard, and it keeps them just as busy as a bone, with no bone leftover for the lawnmower to shoot out!

i keep them in an open wire basket on the porch, and it is often raided when passing through the porch to go outside…

i made the mistake of chunking and giving after a meal a couple of times, so now, all 5 dogs sit and wait expectantly after meals for their potato treat…if not, one of the terriers starts barking, and chaos ensues.

i am thrilled that they enjoy something so healthy, easily kept and obtained, and cheap…and i can get 15 lbs of them for 9 bucks at the local produce stand…that generally lasts a week…

so healthy

full of sugar and high in calories? 7 grams of sugar and 100 kcal per small sweet potato. There’s less sugar in a human sugar cookie.
sugar really isn’t good for dogs. Linked to obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, filthy teeth, and possibly cancer.
I have serious doubts that sweet potatoes are healthy snacks for dogs, especially if given frequently and in large amounts (anything is fine if given rarely).
Especially if your dog is already on a typical extremely high carbohydrate kibble diet.
Home-made chicken jerky is probably a better choice.

well, considering it was the vet that said either raw carrots or sweet potatoes would be good, that’s what i went with…certainly better than tainted treats or bones, and i don’t make chicken jerky…chicken is main meal stuff, not snacks, and is gone in an instant…at least the potatoes keep them occupied for a while…i’d go broke feeding chicken jerky for snacks…
and yes, my dogs are all healthy, no teeth or weight issues
